Foxy Brown - Chyna Doll

Joining a cadre of similar-sounding and conceptually cloned efforts, Foxy Brown's Chyna Doll takes its place among a field of equally mundane offerings. While Brown has shown some maturation, especially on cuts like the surprisingly personal "My Life," she's still talking about her "ill na na" ("Tramp") or making pretentious bids for big Willie (Wilma?) status ("4-5-6"). Mostly, though, Chyna Doll just sounds like any number of New York-based rap albums, especially with its commercial formula of shuffling high hats, catchy hooks, and recycled funk loops. this album broke records

when this album came out it was one of the biggest debuts by a female hip hop artist and was even listed in the guiness book of world records around 2000. The first half of it is great, much more feminine than the last album and with samples used in a clever way with guest appearances by dmx, total and mya. The second half does nothing for me though a couple of the interludes cracked me up. She was trying to be too much like lil kim on this album but I still like it. October 25, 2005

Brown's Sophomore Effort 3.5/5

When first hearing this cd, Brown's voice totally changed. What the hell? This album is pretty good but the voice doesn't sound hardcore. Unlike Ill Na Na, 18 year old Foxy co-wrote every song this time. If it wasn't for the really good production on this album, I would give this 3 out of 5 stars. She is just super good

I'm a big Linda Ronstadt fan, always have been. I like nothing better than grabbing some chicken in a biscuit crackers, a bottle of ginger ale and throwing on some Linda Ronstadt to relax after a tough week of throwing garbage at donkeys. Whether it's "You're no good" or her early Stone Ponies stuff a little Linda makes me jovial. I think I've finally found the next Linda Ronstadt and it's this Foxy Brown lady. What a pleasant young lady. She sings great songs that remind of the show tunes of yore. I picture her in a square dancing outfit on a hillside singing these lovely melodies every time I get this disc out. It's theraputic like a bubble bath with the Elmo bubbles that come in the red bottle. Foxy is a girl with great morals and a good head on her shoulders. I have a daughter and if she grows up to be the white Foxy Brown I will have done my job as a parent. Great CD, get it for everyone that you have to buy presents for. April 16, 2005

Name That Style (2 Stars)

Here's the problem with "jiggy" rap music: There's no originality. Anyone who heard Foxy's Ill Na Na album knows Foxy's style of rhyming. If you've listened to that album and then tried to listen to this one, then you probably know what I'm about to say, but I'll say it anyway: Foxy bit Lil' Kim so hard on this album that when I first heard "Hot Spot" I thought it was Kim until I heard the chorus. Not only did she bite Kim's flow, she even tried to sound like her. Where'd that chick with the deep voice go on this album? Anyone that doesn't hear it or can't admit to it is either biased or in denial. There's also lots of typical/generic tunes on this CD that fail to seperate Foxy from the rest of the pack. "Dog & A Fox" features DMX on what is possibly the lamest chorus I've EVER heard this side of Vanilla Ice. Not even Jay Z could keep "Bonnie & Clyde Pt. 2" from being incredibly lame. And "Ride (Down South)" is the obligatory "southern" track that comes off as just plain sad. The unoriginality doesn't stop there though. Even the skits bite other artists. The "Bomb A**" skit bites an old Snoop Dogg skit and is probably the worst skit ever and the intro is a spinoff of Notorious B.I.G.'s intro from his first album. There's nothing original about this album. All of the subject matter is the same and the beats are generic for the most part. Basically, the album is wack.

There are a few highlights to be found on the album, but not many. "Hot Spot" is very catchy if you can get past her biting Kim's style. "I Can't" features Total and "J.O.B." features Mya and they both are somewhat tolerable if you can get past the generic subject matter.

Basically, I wouldn't reccomend this album to anyone. It's wack. Period. Anyone with two fully functional ears can hear the differences in this and her other albums. That lack of originality makes this album almost painful to listen to. Avoid at all costs.

Couple Good Tracks

This album was actually the first time I heard Foxy. It definitely has it high points, but mainly brought down with low ones. A lot of forgettable tracks, that aren't bad but are boring, but there are a lot of bad tracks too. Fox shines the most on the tracks that she's on by herself, which isn't a lot. This album got me listening but her first album "Ill Na Na" made me a fan. The albums stand outs are Hot Spot and My Life. But I Can't, Dog and a Fox, and J.O.B. are also worth a listen. If your a fan of Fox I suggest giving this album a listen, but if you're not I suggest passing this one, and going for Ill Na Na or her best Broken Silence. November 24, 2004
