I first saw Hugh Harris as the opener for Sam Brown (of Stop fame). Hugh came across a moody distant soul prodigy full of arrogance and distance but clearly very talented as both a writer and a vocalist but as the set settled in he opened up into a sublime talent deserving of his aura.
I went out the next day and bought this album to find possibly the most genuine pieces of UK soul music ever produced. It is clean and well polished production wise but inventive and impressive on the creative front. Hugh can clearly sing and the music prowess of the musicians matches the writing of the music.
The final seen of Uncle Buck closes with the opening bars of 'The Rhythm of Life' and it's hard to stop the movie until the track is through as it is very impressive piece of work.
comparisons to Prince arise in reviews amongst others (intersting as he was at one point dating Princes sworn enemy Sinead o'conner.), But it has to be said that Hugh is a unique talent and a very under recognised artist
December 9, 2006WORDS FOR OUR YEARS is a stellar but overlooked ablum. As far as I know, it did well in the E.U. and Hugh seemed to have a bright future, but he suddenly disappeared. This album is a classic on par with Prince's SIGN O' THE TIMES and Sananda Matreiaya's WILDCARD. In addition to the one single "the Rhythm of Life" other great cuts are "Hellen Highwater" and "Mr. Woman and Mrs. Man."
For those of you interested in Hugh's latest CD, it's called FLOWERS (released in 2002 on Airwave Records), and can be special ordered from Amazon.UK. This is another masterwork and includes contributions from Wendy & Lisa (from Prince and the Revolution) and if you can believe it, Dave Koz who adds a tasteful touch of saxophone. It was recorded in West Hampstead & Echo Park. Standout cuts are "Seven days," "To the moon and back," "Naked in the sun" and "Flowers." March 23, 2004

Anyone who has heard Hugh Harris sing has probably done so unawares. This outstanding soulful work's best showpiece is undoubtedly 'the Rhythm Of Live'. This track accompanies John Candy's exit in the final scene of 'Uncle Buck', a film which if you haven't seen already, I would thoroughly recommend you do so. Hugh Harris sings evocatively with a voice that has an incredible range. Why this man hasn't produced any additional work (to my knowledge) is beyond me. His unique vocalization of lyrics that quite honestly don't always make sense, will nevertheless enthrall you and ensure that this cd doesn't just gather dust on the shelf. Highly recommended.
