Quality music from a classy singer

Suzy became one of my favorites singers with her incredible but commercially unsuccessful debut album and has remained one of my favorites ever since. This album is fairly typical of the majority of her music - classy contemporary country with an occasional slice of more traditional country. I get the impression that Suzy really prefers the traditional stuff but she knows that a successful career requires a contemporary style.

So this album contains songs from a variety of pop, rock, country and folk songwriters. John Hiatt, whose songs have often been recorded by Bonnie Raitt, is represented by two songs (Drive south,, Lovin' a hurricane). Lowell George (of Little Feat) co-wrote the opening track, Heartache. Cheryl Wheeler (a folk-country singer with a great sense of humor) is represented by one of her sad songs, Don't wanna. Matraca Berg, the prolific country hit writer, co-wrote Eat at Joe's. Richard Leigh, famous for writing Don't it make my brown eyes blue, wrote Cold day in July. Originally recorded by Joy Lynn White, this song was eventually recorded by the Dixie Chicks.

The remaining songs were written or co-written by either Suzy or Doug Crider, with the couple collaborating together for In the day. Letting go (co-written by Doug) is perhaps the best and most famous of their own songs.

Another Shining Moment

Following up her commercial breakthrough, as well as garnering the CMA Horizon Award, Suzy Bogguss unleashed another sterling set in VOICES IN THE WIND. Much like ACES, Bogguss relies on a stellar song selection and her crystalline soprano to convey some of her strongest work yet. She covers John Hiatt not once but twice in two of the set's highlights, the rollicking 'Drive South' and the equally exuberant 'Lovin A Hurricane'. Among the ballads, 'Heartache' remains one of her most country-sounding records, as well as one of her best, and 'Cold Day In July', later covered by the Dixie Chicks, is also terrific. This, along with ACES, marks some of the best country to come out of the early part of the nineties. December 2, 2001

One of the best voices

Suzy Bogguss is clearly one of the greatest talents in country music this decade. This album is one of the best sets by a female country singer by far in the 1990s, where great country is sometimes a rare thing. Top-notch songwriting and dynamic readings make this album a winner-and one you will listen to repeatedly. Buy this album! September 19, 1999

Voices in the Wind is a solid choice

Suzy Bogguss' album Voices in the Wind is a solid album by one of country music's top vocalists. There's a number of uptempo tunes including two penned by John Hiatt,"Drive South" and "Lovin' A Hurricane". A fun toe-tapping bluesy song "Eat at Joe's", a Matraca Berg/Gary Harrison tune, is perfectly sung by Suzy and includes great accompaniment by Mark O'Connor on fiddle and Matt Rollings on keyboard. "Letting Go" is a beautiful and poignant song about a young woman leaving home for the first time. Overall, this is a solid choice for country music fans. February 28, 1999
