Once middle-American radio gods now occupying an uneasy position in the classic-rock arena (they're too pop to be "classic" in the ordinary sense, but too huge to ignore), it'd be a lie to say that the critics ever loved Survivor. But they had hooks, and while Dave Bickler was on vocals (as on "Eye of the Tiger"), they had hard rock appeal as well. The next big hit was "Can't Hold Back," but by then, the band had turned down the volume and drifted more towards the Toto side of things. This collection covers all of the band's most popular phases and includes all the key tracks. It also supersedes their previous greatest hits package. --Gavin McNett Amazon.com
Although this album brings back memeories of a horrific relationship with this one gal, the relationship has long since been over and the music continues. The album is awesome.
August 26, 2007 | | This, ULTIMATE SURVIVOR, EYE OF THE TIGER, And VITAL SIGNS Are The Essential Survivor | |
GREATEST HITS, along with the newer compilation ULTIMATE SURVIVOR and the studio albums EYE OF THE TIGER and VITAL SIGNS, form the essential Survivor library. The band is very professional, and the songs are quite inspirational. However, you sort of get the feeling that lead singers David Bickler and Jimi Jamison are trying a little bit too hard for their own good. This is a minor quibble, but if you want real soul, try Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, Bob Seger, U2, or any Southern rock band.
September 2, 2005this band changed my life with this album. i loved rocky soundtrack eye of the tiger and burning heart . that both hit the chart's in the uk. with eye of the tiger hitting #1. and burning heart #5 which show's this band is not a one hit wounder. and show's any one one who love's 80's rock music should own this album. if you don't well i am sick with you. i was 16 when i bought this album only heard of them two hit's. i heard more. i just had goosebumps from hearing more of them so then i just bought every album from amazon. which is great so any survivor fan out there buy more survivor albums if you don't own any of the others.

Survivor was never at the top of my must have list. For the most part, they came, they saw, they left in the 80's. There hasn't been much heard about this band since. But a few years ago, I happened to catch them in concert with Styx and REO Speedwagon. While I enjoyed Styx the most, I felt as if Survivor was the happiest group to be there. It seemed as if they appreciated the applause and cheers more than any of the other groups. For that reason, and the fact that I enjoyed their music, I sought out more of their songs.
"Eye Of The Tiger" was their biggest hit. I think everybody remembers that one. At my old high school, our mascot was the tiger, so naturally "Eye Of The Tiger" became the song played over the PA system before every home game(on a turntable, no less). Even today, when many schools with a tiger mascot play songs like "Welcome To The Jungle," they still manage to play "Eye Of The Tiger." It's truly a timeless song that is loved by many.
While searching for more songs, I came to realize that I already knew most of their songs. I just didn't know that they sang them. "Burning Heart" was always "that Rocky song" to me. I really liked it, but never took the time to find out that Survivor sang it. "The Search Is Over," "I Can't Hold Back," and "High On You" were also big surprises to me. I've always liked them, but was unaware that they were Survivor material.
This album includes all of those huge hits, and it also contains songs that a casual fan like myself may not be aware of. "Hungry Years" and "Somewhere In America" are new to me, and I've come to really enjoy them.
I recommend this album to anyone who likes that old 80's melodic/slightly hard rock. These guys ruled the 80's for a reason, a really good sounding one. April 27, 2004

Not being an expert of "Survivor" band. I love their tunes and lyrics. My favorite song is "The search is over". Eversince I heard this song I thought it would be the perfect song I should dedicate to whom I'd marry. As the song says I searched for long to find the right mate. It took me 15 years and much heartbreaks to get to that point. Eventually I dedicated it to my wife. It means so much to me. I had to translate the lyrics into Spanish for her in order to get the meaning of the words. She loved it too. This melody keeps coming to my mind everytime we celebrate our anniversary.
