| Love it! |
Before this album I was a fan of Billy Idol, not devoted - I don't own all of his albums, but I enjoyed the stuff from the 80's. This album is completely different. I agree with other reviewers who say you can either really love it or really hate it. I really love it! My favorite songs are Shock to the System (of course), and Adam in Chains (I actually skip back to this song to relisten to it quite often). But all of the songs are incredible!
I do recommend that anyone thinking of purchasing this album sample it first to see if its right for you. But do give it a chance! February 27, 2008
| Not Your Typical Billy |
On the other hand, its an experiment that (despite flaws) has Idol's agressive vocal instrument at its core, at times competing with an equal demand of attention from a wall of goa-influenced instrumentation.
Traditional Idol fans might want to pass this effort up and go directly to Devil's Playground, where Idol masterfully combines the lessons learned from Cyberpunk more along the lines of his base, but then they would miss out on standout, deep grooving gems like Wasteland (which samples The Road Warrior [film]), Venus, and the vibrant upbeat dance Mother Dawn - go ahead, give it a try, you'll delight in Idol's organic vocals and perhaps find room to appreciate the techno-influenced instrumentation.
This is the first Idol effort that I consistently listen to from beginning to end, and it gets high rotation on the iPod going on 15 years later. Like Devil's Playground there are straight rockers (within the context of this experimental album), chillout tracks, and the Idol sensibilities in lyrical content that we've come to expect.
Although the term is over-used, this is an album "ahead of its time", and one that I think will be pointed to as an early combination of styles that paved the way for a niche ([...]). A little too daring for the fanbase of 1993, but a straight bullseye for an audience that perhaps only now is coming into the mainstream.
Those that appreciate a post-apocalyptic esthetic or seek to combine the sounds of the Dance with more traditional rock formatting will want this album in their collection. September 28, 2007
