About Nancy Wilson - Nancy Wilson - Greatest Hits [Sony]

Two tracks from Nancy Wilson's early Capitol Records years outclass everything else on this compilation, which otherwise concentrates on the jazz/pop/lite-R&B singer's '80s and '90s work for Columbia. On the two torchy Capitol tracks, "Guess Who I Saw Today" and "Save Your Love for Me" (the latter from Wilson's 1962 collaboration with Cannonball Adderley), she blends strong, bluesy chops with bittersweet sentiments. The more recent stuff is hardly as straightforward; most of the time, her vocals are swamped by ricky-tick adult-contemporary production that renders the music fit only for smooth-jazz radio. And when Wilson does slip into a stripped-down trio format with the likes of Brad Mehldau and Christian McBride on Stephen Sondheim's "Loving You," she still has to contend with bland duet partner Peabo Bryson. Greatest Hits serves mainly to point out the fact that Nancy Wilson best uses her voice these days as host of public radio's Jazz Profiles. --Rickey Wright Amazon.com

Although I had heard Nancy Wilson years ago, she just came to my attention again. She has a great voice and delivery and the songs are terrific. I've been listening to this CD over and over since it arrived and it's now one of my favorites. October 17, 2007

The "Lady With A Song" Nancy Wilson is a living legend who brilliantly reinvents herself about every ten years and soars to new heights thrilling her continuing audience who have eagerly awaited each new release over the years with joy and anticipation and Miss Nancy has always delivered...mostly exceeding expectations!!! Over the years it always amazed me that somehow Nancy has managed to have a certain audience from the distant past who only seem to accept Nancy doing old songs from the very beginning of her long and brilliant career and don't have a clue what a brilliant body of work has happened through all of these years since 1962...talk about being caught in a time warp...yikes! But for those of us who continued the thrilling ride with this timeless soulful Diva it has been a satisfying and worthwhile one filled with a treasure chest of incredible performances that are both classic and timeless!
Each great collection that this totally awesome collection is drawn from is a must have for any true lover of the classic popular singer and "Keep You Satisfied", "Two Of Us" (stunning collection with Ramsey Lewis), "Forbidden Lover", "Nancy Now!", "Lady With A Song", "Love, Nancy", "If I Had My Way", are all incredible 80's-90's releases filled with wondrous songs and tremendous performances which are the kind that grow greater with repeated play and make lasting memories that bring back life experiences whenever revisited. "Love Won't Let Me Wait" is a soulful gem and definitive...dreamy and hypnotic, "Do You Still Dream About Me" is another to play over and over...original classic group back Nancy on "Don't Ask My Neighbors" making this a new classic and "Lady With A Song" is a soulful torchy anthem that is so richly dramatic. A few of Nancy's classic sixties songs are included but the new material is where the mature Diva really shines and stuns! Now if only someone over at the Capitol Records Towers would wake up and release Nancy's classic seventies masterworks all would be fair in love and the music world...one of these awesome unreleased to cd works ("I Know I Love Him") have The Jazz Crusaders backing Nancy doing material from Marvin Gaye and others making one wonder what is wrong over at the Capitol Records Towers (is the air up in those Towers that thin?)...Nancy recorded at Capitol over twenty years but less than ten years of this stellar and incomparable body of work have been released...what's up with that? For now those who enjoy the finest have this stellar release of Nancy's later work which is not to be missed and is a definite must have! Bravo Nancy!!!! August 15, 2007
