Motley Crue-Shout At The Devil ****1/2

Nikki Sixx said he wrote the entire album Shout At The Devil inspired by the sound of Mick Mars' guitar sound, I can believe it. Mars' guitar crunch is really the backbone for the whole damn thing. From his chugging riff on the title track to his overly cheesy, yet very much essential distortion on the cover of The Beatles' 'Helter Skelter' Mars guitar gives the album the balls it needs.

While on it's release nearly every critic cited this as the most "unoriginal album ever" I must say in hindsight that is just ignorant. Yeah glam had been done before with Bowie, The New York Dolls, and Bolen, and yeah shock had been done before with Alice Cooper, Kiss, and W.A.S.P. but never were they mixed together, and never was it this loud. So it isn't the most original thing ever, it is the musing of a few styles, but then again everything in rock n' roll after Frank Zappa's Freak Out hasn't been totally original.

The opening was meant to be cool but does come across as stupid. The title track as well as 'Looks That Kill' are glam-metal (if that title makes sense) classics. 'Bastard' Kills! 'Helter Skelter' owns the original in my opinion. 'Red Hot' is essential. 'Too Young Too Fall In Love' is the best song the band ever recorded that wasn't included on their greatest hits package. The albums three closing tracks 'Knock Em Dead Kid' 'Ten Seconds To Love' and 'Danger' are all Motley classics.

The only weak moments on the album are the opener and the 'God Bless The Children Of The Beast' segue which are just a stupid attempt at camp. Nikki Sixx is one of the most underrated songwriters of all time, he really has a talent for melody and rock lyrics. Vince Neils vocals sound the best here that they ever did, and Tommy Lee proves once again that he is one of the elite in the world of drumming. This is easily the best Motley album. The only one to even contend is Too Fast For Love. Dr. Feelgood has too much filler. If you want some good Motley then Shout At The Devil is the way to go.

This record is pretty much in the same vein as the Crue's debut of Too Fast for Love -- Sleazy, sloppy, and trashy but in an energetic fun way. The production is much better though and singer Vince Neil puts in a nasty vocal performance just like on Too Fast for Love, but the band musically performs better.

Tommy Lee never skips a beat with his hard hitting and harsh pounding drum beats. It still has the raw metal garage sound with songs like "To Young To Fall In Love" and "Looks That Kill" that became all-time Crue classics. The songs have memorable guitar riffs and catchy choruses. The title track got them branded as satan worshipers, which they aren't, but the publicity certainly didn't hurt their career. April 16, 2008

This album really got me interested in the band, but I have to admit, nothing else they did compares. They have some other good songs, but not albums. With that said, this album rocks! Definitely a classic in my book. To this day, its a great listen. Definitely happy to have this one in my collection. September 6, 2007

Well, personally, I really liked this CD, even though I preffered Too fast for love. All the people who have said they hated the CD have failed to support their reasons why, and their spelling sucks. So, firstly, why should I take heed to someone who can't even express themselves well? And secondly, I think music is more of an objective thing, it's either your style or it isn't. So even if you think it's total crap, or if you loved it and think its the best thing to hit this planet, I bet there'll always be someone who hates what you like and like what you hate. What I took all this time trying to say, is that you can't really judge art, in any form. May 29, 2007
