About Camp Lo - Uptown Saturday Night

While they aren't the first to do so, Camp Lo's Sonny Cheeba and Geechie Suede make a direct appeal from hip-hop's current generation back to the blaxploitation era on Uptown Saturday Night, which recrafts the up-tempo, party atmosphere of the swinging 1970s, resplendent in the musical and cultural iconography of Harlem- and Bronx-style blaxploitation. Even for listeners who never watched Shaft, Superfly, or The Mack, Camp Lo's songs carry themselves with a cool air of slick styles. As critics have noted, Cheeba and Suede's lyrics are often nonrhyming barrages of key blaxploitation terminology that--read conventionally--actually make no sense, but their spitfire pacing makes up in style what their verses lack in content (which is actually a pretty good description of blaxploitation, if you think about it). Much credit needs to go to producer Ski (who was also the musical mastermind behind Jay Z's impressive debut, Reasonable Doubt), who shows a smart sampling ear with bubbly pop tracks that are infectious enough to rock the party while still appealing to hardcore hip-hop heads. --Oliver Wang Amazon.com

I peeped this cats as a DJ back in '96 when I was DJ for my College radio Station. I got the full album prior to the 97 relase and i was like, these cats are about to blowup. I had a 2 hr mix show 3 times a week and i made sure they were in rotation. thses cats were before their time, like the pharcyde, Sons of men, and Souls of Mischief. i keep them on my oldschool playlist on my Ipod. I remember coming home from middle school and running straight to the remote and changing it to channel 44....BET's RapCity with host Big Tigger. lol. Well they had a video to a song called "Luchini" by a group called Camp Lo, i was instantly addicted to this 70's style Coolie high type of song. Like I was blown away by the horn riffs and the catchy hook that I had to get the album. $11.99 was alot of money at 14 years old. But soon later after mowing lawns and cleaning toilet bowls I was able to save up and get it. But I can honestly say that it was worth sticking my hand in toilet water because this album CHANGED MY LIFE!. Growing up listening to 70's LP's my parents had, I was always a fan of the 70's sound ranging from The Commodores, Jermain Jackson, Steely Dan and Stevie Wonder that this album kinda brought the sound back with a more hiphop vibe. Sad to say this group ended up catching the sophmore disease and released a couple more albums quite mediocre to this one, but hey, cant complain, this album is beautiful. February 23, 2008

This album came at a great price, and I would definitely buy from this vendor through Amazon again. It was arrived quickly after I purchased it, and it's a great listen; a classic. Thank you very much! January 14, 2008

I'm one of the people who have owned this album since its release in 1997, and a few things I would like to discuss in regards to this album. First of all, back in 1997, when I saw the videos for Luchini and Black Nostaljack, I KNEW I was going to purchase this album, and on June 28, 1997 from Crockett's Records Tapes and CDs in Petersburg, VA, along with the classic Wu-Tang Forever double CD, for my birthday! From that moment I played the CD @ my aunt's house, this album has been a part of my collection ever since. (Funny story here: A few years ago, I was cleaning out my collection, basically getting rid of albums that were collecting dust and albums that I didn't really listen to, but when I ran across Camp Lo's album, I didn't have to think twice about keeping it. I knew this was going to remain, and I'll explain why towards the end of this review.) Geechie Suede and Sonny Chiba exhibit an excellent display of style and grace throughout this entire album. IF there is a flaw on this album, it's that @ times, you do get a sense of trying to figure out just what they're talking about, but due to their charisma on the mic, their style, the way they recite the rhymes, that's all forgivable due to their presence on the mic, no doubt. Every song on this album is a moment to listen to. You wouldn't find yourself skipping any songs or getting bored of this album. If has all of the ingredients that make you enjoy an album, such as lyrics, nice beats, originality, and just many other things you DON'T find on albums today. Overall, Camp Lo delivers an awesome album here, clear of dull moments. This album was released in 1997, which was a tremendous time for me personally, but also a time when music was just that, MUSIC. This is a tremendous 97 memory for me, as this album represents that time and era, and sadly, there will never be another era like it. Strong recommendation for this album. September 18, 2007
