About Suzy Bogguss - Suzy Bogguss

Of the long list of Nashville women, only a few stand out for technically pristine voices, and Suzy Bogguss, with her wonderfully clear contralto and pinpoint intonation, is near the top of the list. Yet in her many years of recording, she's never quite achieved the breakthrough that an early Country Music Association Award promised. Suzy Bogguss, which cruises down the middle of the radio-friendly road, is a good example of why this is so. While Bogguss writes and performs tasteful material that scores high points for integrity and beauty--check out the wistful ballad "An Empty Heart and a Harvest Moon," cowritten by her husband, Doug Crider--she doesn't always infuse her performances with the emotion necessary to involve the listener. That said, this low-key program--much of it about new beginnings and the self-reliance necessary to start over--has its moments. But a good dose of spirited Western swing might have done wonders. --Alanna Nash Amazon.com

I bought this album because I'd heard one song off it, which was "Good night." After getting the album and giving it a listen through, I've been nothing but pleased.

Suzy is an excellent contemporary country artist. I tend to be a fan of older country like Merle Haggard, or fringe country like Dwight Yoakam, but Suzy definately pleases on this album.

This album is hard to find in Calgary, FYI. October 6, 2002

The ... review of this album and of Bogguss assumesthatboth have to make a Nashville 'breakthrough' to be reallygood. Suzy does her regular, quite identifiable, independent thing onthis album and at a very high standard. She does music that appeals tothe soul. Western swing is not her thing. She obviously cares more formusic than money. .... That said, this album is a keeper if there everwas one. March 19, 2001

Have you ever had a cd that you loved so much you've wondered how the artist was ever going to top it? I felt that way after hearing Suzy's cd "Give Me Some Wheels". When her last cd, "Nobody Loves Nobody Gets Hurt", came out, I figured she had reached the apex. There was no way she could top it. I'm glad to say I was wrong! Suzy's new cd, "Suzy Bogguss", continues to show what a vibrant, strong performer and songwriter she is. There aren't many voices as pure as hers. Just one listen to a track like "Look What Love Has Done" will thrill you with the clarity, precision, and simple beauty of her voice. The first single, "Goodnight", is simultaneously uplifting and heartbreaking, with a classic sound that people will be playing for years. Another highlight is "Love Is Blind", a duet with T. Graham Brown. He's got a gravelly, powerful voice that really compliments her. Suzy Bogguss has definitely hit a new creative pinnacle with this one. If you haven't checked out her previous cd's, I'd also recommend "Something Up My Sleeve", "Aces", and the two I mentioned at the beginning of the review. Also, if you like Suzy, you should also check out Matraca Berg, another incredible singer/songwriter. September 15, 1999

SUZY BOGGUSS has delivered an awesome stock of goods with her latest self-titled project from Platinum records!! If you thought Suzy had already recorded her best stuff in the past, THINK AGAIN!! She just pushed it to a whole 'nother level! Nobody can interpret a song better than Suzy. Her music has soul, sung with so much feeling. From the first notes of "Taking That Red-Eye Home", the listener is whisked away on a musical odyssey that soars! "Goodnight" for some reason makes me think of Patsy Cline! It's a gem! "Love Is Stronger" is as soulful a country song as you'll ever here! Suzy's duet with T. Graham Brown is a classic!! When I first heard about this collaboration, I have to admit, I couldn't imagine these two sounding good together, Suzy's crystal-clear smoothness, and T's gruff and grinding toughness. Believe me, the result is incredible! "Hold Me To It" is one of the prettiest songs Suzy has ever recorded, absolutely wonderful! "Love Every Time" is fun and jazzy, while "It's A Perfect Day (For a Little Rain)" has a funky feel! "Look What Love Has Done To Me" will make your ears(and heart) melt! Twelve songs total on this project, and none of them are fillers. You're gonna love it! There may be other artists receiving more promotion and airplay, but Suzy's simply the best! August 31, 1999
