OK--but oh, so limited it doesn't do her justice

20th Century Masters: The Best Of Brenda Lee gives us some great hits and ballads by the wonderful Brenda Lee--too bad they had the nerve to call this CD a "best of" compilation. There's just no way twelve tracks could ever be called the "best of" Brenda Lee. Sure, what we do get is very high quality controlled beautiful music; but there's just not enough of it for me! The sound is rather good and the artwork is typical for this CD series.

"I'm Sorry" begins the CD with a moving ballad about a love that is in trouble; and Brenda sings this with all her heart and soul. The strings sound great and Brenda's backup vocalists support her very well. "Sweet Nothin's" has a great early rockin' beat as Brenda bats this straight out of the ballpark! Brenda's excellent diction bolsters her performance even more and the brass on this tune is very impressive.

"I Want To Be Wanted" is probably my favorite Brenda Lee number of all time; she sings this with passion and many single people can identify with this moving ballad. "I Want To Be Wanted" lacks nothing--its' THAT good. I could never tire of listening to Brenda singing this fine love song.

"You Can Depend On Me" is another tender love ballad that gets the royal treatment from Brenda as she sings this to perfection. The musical arrangement is very elegant and the whole number works very well. "That's All You Gotta Do" has a rockin' beat with just a twist of country to make this number shine like gold when Brenda sings it so well! Brenda uses this song to show off the very fine qualities of her voice. Listen also for "Break It To Me Gently;" this country flavored love song features Brenda's vocals squarely in the spotlight--where they belong--as she sings a song of a woman mourning the loss of her man.

"Everybody Loves Me But You" sounds great when Brenda sings it; and the backup vocalists again do a great job. The piano arrangement is subtle in the background but it works to add a great deal to "Everybody Loves Me But You." The CD ends with Brenda performing "All Alone Am I;" this melancholy ballad has Brenda singing wonderfully and there seems to be a harpsichord or some similar instrument that embellishes the music very well.

Overall, I have no complaint with the songs they selected for this CD. They're wonderful, to say the least. However, a twelve track set doesn't cut it in my book as any type of "best of" compilation. This CD is truly geared toward the more casual fan who wants just some of Brenda's artistry. The diehard fan should consider CDs with more substance to them that are available for sale on this website.

Brenda is a pleasant singer.

I have an impression that a voice of Brenda of youth is fresh.
I can understand that the nickname which she calls a little dynamite was given.
However, her good point is not only simple spirit.There is a really tasteful atmosphere when I listen to her song well.
"ALL Alone AM I" is the most splendid tune in this CD. October 17, 2007

It has brought back a lot of memories for her. Great CD.

Wonderful Early Brenda Lee

I reccommend this product to anyone who was looking for themselves in the late 60's and early 70's. We were all looking for the fairy tale world and perfect love. It's a wonderful reminder.
