Pink Floyd - Animals

Although not in the same vein as the deliciously hallucinogenic earlier Floyd works such as Ummagumma and Dark Side of the Moon, Animals is innovative and musically diverse in its own right. Inspired in part by George Orwell's political fable Animal Farm, Roger Waters condemns the avarice and inequalities of capitalism, metaphorically and musically grouping humans as pigs, dogs, and sheep. Animals...one of their best

This album is one of Pink Floyd's best albums. It is not quite as good as DSOTM or WYWH or The wall...but it had a feeling to it that was very nice to me. However, it doesn't sound exactly like other Pink Floyd music. As one of my friends said, its like Pink Floyd's weirdness and normal rock mixed together. I got mad at him at first, but I think he was right. This is Pink Floyd as hard rockish/normal as possible. Enjoy it....the songs are great June 12, 2008

The Forgotten Album

The Waters political view of modern mankind. There are some very good David Gilmour guitar solos, although, in a few parts, he get's apart of his melodic style. May 12, 2008

One of the most obscure but by far my favorite

The biggest issue I have with Animals is that it is not longer. It is a short album and I wanted more. Not as melodic as Wish You Were Here and Dark Side but the beginning of the more angry side of Waters lyrics. Dogs is a favorite track of mine as well as Pigs. The songs are longer which is nice. A very cool album. Turn out the lights and listen loud. April 19, 2008

Contrasting to other Pink Floyd works

In 'Animals' Pink Floyd supposedly went in a little different direction compared to their other works. The music in this album is less spacey and atmospheric, and is harder than most of their other albums. This goes with the fact that all five songs in this album have lyrics. While this album is less experimental compared to many other PF work, it is still quite innovative. I agree with many of the reviewers here that this is one of their finest work, although unfortunately, it's not as well known as, say, DSOTM. What most people hardly point out though, are the first and last songs from this album (Pigs on the Wing, part 1 and 2). These two songs are short, a little over a minute in length, and they are very different from the rest of this album. Strange as it may sound, these two are actually love songs. That's right, love songs. Strange, because I don't know many PF songs that are about love. Well, both of these songs are just amazing, and while many people don't care much about them, I would rate them among PF's best songs. Six lines of lyrics and pure magic.

The rest of the album includes the three songs in the middle - Dogs, Pigs and Sheep. These are very different from the two songs mentioned earlier. Very negative and bleak, these three songs are metaphorical, drawing parallels to the society. And yes, they are long - 'Dogs' is the longest at over 17 mins. I personally like 'Dogs' best among the three, but all of them are really great.

An extraordinary album. If you want to venture outside the more well-known PF work, listen to this one. April 12, 2008
