Having authored the first "authorized" biography of an anthemic rock group (I Want to Take You Higher: The Life and Times of Sly & the Family Stone, available through amazom), I've been psyched about how music can rouse a nation. Sousa's creations have been fueling that spirit for over a century now, and it's great to be able to hear on one recording what we've heard marching through our streets and across football fields and movie and tv screens all these years, along with a few less familiar tunes. Very good for your state of mind, in a time when hope for the state of the nation is also high. I Want to Take You Higher: The Life and Times of Sly and the Family Stone
November 11, 2008 | | Great music with authentic sound | |
Great CD I've read the other reviews and though the sound quality isn't as good as top 40 pop the sound is true to the music and that can't be beat. These classic American songs remind us of the strong heritage we come from. Just like these melodies that dance through our history, this album is the sound track to that history and it's depth reflects the depth of our history. This a great album anyone who loves our heritage will enjoy.
October 10, 2008Sousa is the greatest march composer ever. I can listen to this one over and over again and still enjoy every march. Excellent CD.
August 25, 2008I bought this for walking..It gets me a mile in 18 minutes..Works for me.

April 28, 2008This album is a great disappointment. Tempo is slow and execution is not crisp as it should be. There are better versions of Stars and Stripes Forever, and Semper Fidelis that make me want to pick up my feet and march. This album puts me to sleep!
Instruments seem to be competing for the spotlight rather than working for a cohesive sound. Sounds like a high school. . . make that a junior high school band. I wish I could get my money back. The only positive feature is that there are 18 tracks so I could learn the names of songs I'd heard long ago.
