About Anna & The King: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

George Fenton delivers on his soundtrack for Anna and the King with an instrumental score that deftly mixes sweeping orchestrations with ethnic percussion. The main theme "Arrival at the Palace" begins with a very exotic violin solo that quickly blossoms into an epic orchestral movement seemingly ready to crescendo at a moment's notice (and it does!). Shorter cues such as "Letter of the Week" and "The House" are passages that perfectly convey the movie's exoticism and its melancholic moods. Throughout, Fenton's music seems to balance between excitement and sadness--the perfect sonic interpretation of The King and I's classic tale. Obviously, many folks will turn to this soundtrack for Joy Enriquez's Babyface-produced single "How Can I Not Love You," included at the very beginning of this disc. One hopes they'll stick around long enough to enjoy the film's score, one of Fenton's very best. --Jason Verlinde Amazon.com

This soundtrack has some of the best songs that I have ever heard. All the songs on this soundtrack are not excellent, but about half the songs are unbelievably good. They make the purchase well worth the money. March 27, 2007

I have never seen the movie, but the soundtrack is beautiful. The first song is wonderful. The rest is great to listen to for a calming afternoon. January 12, 2007

When I love a movie, I usually fell in love with its music and I can't decide that whether the music made me like the movie or the movie made me like the music. "Anna and the King" enchanted me already when I first heard about it and I was eager to watch it. A man and a woman, from two worlds so different, yet they love each other - it sounded so sad and beautiful to me (maybe I am too romantic, but that isn't a big fault, I hope). Since then I learned that the story of the handsome Siamese king and the English governess didn't happen in real life, and that disappointed me a bit, but I still love this movie.

The song "How Can I Not Love You", composed by George Fenton and performed by Joy Enriquez, is a sad one about the two who mustn't love each other, yet they do. Director Andy Tennant describes it with his own words: "His (George Fenton's) love theme isn't really a love theme at all... but rather a "loss" theme. George writes music that speaks to the tragedy of the images rather than the drama, and in that single decision lies utter genius." All the tracks are in mysterious East-style, so they give us a glimpse into that far-away world. September 20, 2003
