Boguslaw Furtok is astonishing on the double bass. He makes you wonder just what instrument he's actually playing. Of course, Bottesini is not the world's most famous composer. But I like these pieces very much, especially the rarely heard F# minor concerto. The Gran duo (with Furtok and Johannes Stahle) is superbly played as well. This is my favorite double bass CD. Phenominal playing. These three works are each played with incredible accuracy and spirit. The rare F# minor concerto is played as though it were as easy as playing a one octave scale, and the Passione Amorosa (four movement version) has many refreshing ideas that aren't heard in other versions. The tempos in all pieces tend to lean on the fast side-especially the last movements, but this isn't always a bad thing. The finale of the duet is as exciting as I've ever heard it. This was a welcomed addition to my CD collection. December 1, 2000
