Folks, this IS a live recording -- One reviewer stated that it's a studio recording and another said he/she didn't believe that it's live because there is no audience noise. Many recordings recently have cut out the audience noise. Just because you don't hear the audience doesn't mean they weren't there. The "Label" isn't going to lie about something like this. Dear Opera fans!

This new recording adds to the growing list of largely unknown operas (especially those in original language). This recording is simply superb! A complete enjoyment for both the serious opera collectors and 'arm chair' listeners.

At first I was sceptical since I'm not usually a big fan of live recordings. I was flabbergasted to hear no imperfections (applause/coughing, etc)-the sound quality is perfect!

The soloists are also in top form. Kasarova's voice is a gem and Vargas does not faulter in the upper register, hence straining his voice. The chorus and orchestra also in top form.

Initially I thought the orchestra sounded muffled and the soloists too close to the microphones, although any doubts were dispelled by the third track.

Great packaging, essays and synopsis, libretto in French, English and German.

I hope this review is helpful to anyone still deciding on purchasing this recording.

Kasarova and Vargas exceed all expectations in the wondeful new recording of La Favorite. The sound in incomparable, and the cast is solid. The gem of this recording is the Mexican Tenor Ramon Vargas. He starts off outstandingly in his opening aria singing the high d flat at maximum volume. This french version is better than any other version including the Pavarotti/Cossotto recording. Ramon Vargas is a treat to listen to. Vesselina Kasarova is outstanding, but she lacks the power in the duets with Vargas. He is the reason for this recording. July 20, 2001

It is always a privledge to an opera its original language and in this case, the libretto is not censured like the Italian version is, but unfortunately the performance is lackluster. Most unfavorable is the work of Kasarova. Her coloratura is heavy handed. Generally speaking the soloists sound under nourished. I'll keep my Italian versions in my collection. April 4, 2001

This is one of Donizetti's strongest operas, more so in the French than in the Italian version. Here it is given a stunning performance by the two leads, Kasarova and Vargas. They have the great advantage of being fine voices in roles that one has not heard over and over again with other great performers. (The Pavarotti/ Cossotto Italian version is the only direct comparison that springs to mind.) Even without this advantage, their performances would stand out and will be hard to beat. The two principals bring a splendid freshness to the performance. It is greatly enhanced by sensitive, idiomatic conducting by Viotti. The other roles are not quite as well delineated, though I felt that all performers were more than adequate. All this makesfor a very enjoyable set, one which is well worth having. November 23, 2000
