| | A favorite when new, still great today... | |
My sister bought this LP when I was a freshman in high school, and between the two of us (she was ten years older) we wore out the vinyl. Great singing, good song selection, intelligent paring down of the show tunes, fine orchestra and arrangements. This is just plain fun and bears up to many repeated listenings. I pulled this CD version out of my mailbox last week and played it through four times in one day, and even though I had not heard this since 1964, I remembered many of the special touches the Lads gave these wonderful lyrics. If you like classic Broadway, and male quartets, grab this while it remains in print.

What a find! I've always been a great fan of The Four Lads, whom I consider the best male group ever. With voices that blend beautifully in 4 part harmony, they can tackle most any song and make it their own. For example, their rendition of Frank Loesser's "Standing on the Corner" (not on this CD) is the best available in my opinion. This release, "Four On the Aisle", is further testament to their collective talents. The 22 tracks contained on this disc are from the Broadway shows "Kiss Me Kate", "Babes in Arms", & "Annie Get Your Gun". Each song rendition is a revelation, although many of these tunes are rather brief and usually last no more than 2 minutes. The sound quality (originally from a 1959 Columbia recording) is truly outstanding. My only minor quibble is the incorrect pronunciation the boys use with the word "wind" (which should be pronounced like wind as in "wind-up toy") in the song "Where Is The Life That I Led?" I anxiously await their Frank Loesser disc to be released in Jan 2001. If you're a Four Lads fan, buy this disc ASAP.
