One day while I was watching the original Cruel Intentions trailer I noticed that the score was done by John Ottman. However,by the time the movie came out his score had been cut and replaced. Then to my amazement while I was surfing the net I came across Ottman's score being released on cd. Being a fan of his for quite a while I was excited. This cd does not disappoint. The first 10 tracks from his CI score are worth the buy alone, but then you get 10 more tracks from some of his other works. That could be a cd in itself. The CI score offers a differnt John Ottman than we've seen and the last 10 tracks give us classic John Ottman. It is a good mix of the old and new that does not disappoint. I have yet to get tired of listening to it and I don't expect to and time soon. Among the noteable songs are well the whole cd. I don't think I can pick a favorite because each piece offers up a different emotional tone than the last one. The Fantasy Island theme stands out as the longest pieces(7:38) on the cd and also one of the ones demonstrating the most range. This cd demonstrates John Ottman's range as a composer and hopefully he will stick around for a long, long time February 4, 2001

Varese Sarabande demonstrates with this latest release from John Ottman - "Cruel Intentions-Suites & Themes from the Scores of John Ottman", just how varied this composer can be. Do not restrict this talented man of music with his past achievements - "The Usual Suspects", "The Cable Guy", "Urban Legends-Final Cut", "Apt Pupil", "Goodbye Lover", "Lake Placid" and "Portrait of Terror" - which a few are included by various suites.

Instead of a classical approach, the producers decided the score should be more contemporary, hip-hoppish, well our composer took on the challenge and wrote a strikingly unique, emotionally deep score with an eccentric blend of beat rhythms, synths, a string trio, and female soloists. There are layers of underscore, infusing complex moods with passages of modern themes, very effective and wonderfully original.

Ottman always brings the necessary emotions to a film through his music, which could explain why this composer is always in demand. And as a bonus, Varese has included selected musical cues from other projects, some never officially released, including a suite from his Emmy-nominated work on "FANTASY ISLAND"...also recently discovered original mixes for "INCOGNITO", so haunting - this is worth the price of admission, as three cues from the original master, unretouched and exactly as John had intended.

Once again, special thanks to Robert Townson and Varese Sarabande for releasing this "movie-music" collectors dream...a must have for ALL the "film-score-buffs" out there!
