About 98A° - The Collection
98 Degrees' smooth, sanitized soul and lush, precise harmonies are more akin to Boyz II Men than the Backstreet Boys. Which is not to say that they attract a different audience than their boy-band brethren; their simplistic but addictive songs of love and heartbreak seem torn from the pages of a Harlequin romance. The 13 songs on this best-of are culled from their 4 albums (including "This Gift" from their Christmas collection), and they rely heavily on lead vocalist Nick Lachey's breathy vocals, well-crafted melodies, and sparse production, but why tinker with a winning formula? These very songs have racked up nearly $10 million in sales for the band. What they lack in imagination, they make up for in guest appearances. Mariah Carey not only loaned them "Thank God I Found You," the song she penned with Terry Lewis, but her voice pushes the romantic ballad to stunning heights. The band also gets a boost when label mate Stevie Wonder takes a verse of "True to Your Heart." His seemingly effortless vocals and trademark harmonica transform the beat-heavy tune into an old-school classic. --Jaan Uhelszki Amazon.com

Learned about Nick Lachey from the Newlyweds reality show and fell in love with his soulful voice from the show's theme song, "This I Swear". I instantly became a fan and got both of his albums and now I've got Nick fever, so I went back to his roots--98 Degrees. My first purchase is this collection of their greatest hits and I love, love it. Of course I got the rest of their albums and its good to hear all of their songs.
There is this soulful and harmonious quality to their voices that is unique and listening to them is relaxing and soothing to the soul and puts one in a good mood. It's easy listening for work and on leisurely days at home with your significant other. All the songs are great and I just can't pick a favorite, it's heavy with Nick's lead vocals which I like. These songs are what I would consider classic--they are enjoyable 6+ years later and will be for many more years to come.
I am in awe at the talent of this group, and even more so after watching Nick's VHI's Behind the Music and learned about their humble beginnings; how they love to sing and worked very hard at their craft. They're fantastic and definitely deserved better recognition.
Nick has an admirable, soulful voice and his talent is quite amazing. (I'm glad to see him out of that dreadful shadow and doing quite well on his own and getting the deserving recognition for his 2nd solo album). Jeff's voice is amazing as well and superb, and Justin and Drew are fabulous and blend in well producing great harmony together. I would most certainly hope that 98 Degrees reunites to make more beautiful music for their fans and future generations to enjoy. June 28, 2006
