About Elton John - Elton John - Greatest Hits 1970-2002

This is the first attempt to consolidate all of Sir Elton's hit singles, from three labels, in one collection. It once would've required at least four CDs to own the best stuff here. Many think the legendary performer was at his best in the early to mid-'70s, and the incredible string of singles that ran from 1970's "Your Song" through 1977's "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" remains mighty impressive. But in retrospect, as they're presented here, '80s hits like "I'm Still Standing" and "Sad Songs" add much to an already amazing legacy. Three Disney tunes, the lush "The One," and two from Songs from the West Coast, which was hailed as a return to those '70s golden days, represent the later years. Collectively, these tracks reinforce the notion that, despite Michael Jackson's later proclamations, John was once the closest thing post-'60s music had to a genuine king of pop, respected by hipsters and the mainstream alike. --Bill Holdship Amazon.com

Elton John,...is terrible on this disc. The songs, "Melou, Melou", "Bride with Red", "Threaten Love Bast" and etc, are just too tedious to non Elton Fans. A complete waste of time if you don't read his books first.

The song "Daniel" is an inexplicably messed up master that fades out just seconds before the actual ending. Never heard that before... Another reviewer also mentioned that Honky Cat and Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting were edited (early fades). Other reviewers complain about the flat or EQ'd mastering problems. The credits say "various songs" remastered by Gus Dudgeon - this would explain the uneven quality (unacceptable from a major label like Universal/UTV).
As many have pointed out, this set is missing the #1 hit "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" (unforgivable) as well as the top 10 hits "Mama Can't Buy You Love" and "Empty Garden". There's several lame 90's tunes on disc two to make it even worse.
Universal's Gold series has done many new collections that had EVERY hit by major artists - so it can be done. May 15, 2008

Every great Elton John song from the 'glory years' is right here in this CD. A while back it occured to me that pop music had undergone a subtle yet very real change, and to me it wasn't for the better. In fact, today, you will find bands re-recording these classics with their own type of imprint and if you are like me, you cringe. Seems they are running out of talent.

Almost every Elton John song is a classic. From the better known "Daniel" or "Rocket Man" to the lesser known but still great "Sad Songs", they are all filled with depth and style. Elton John's music is signature-by that I mean you know immediately when you hear even the instrumental parts before he actually sings, that this is one of his songs.

I came of age listening to these classics. It was great to find them all in one CD and to sit back and reminisce about the time that AM was real and music was truly music. This is a collection you will enjoy for years to come. April 28, 2008

Elton John's greatest hits from "Crocodile Rock" to "The Way You Look Tonight" and all points between. For any Elton John fan looking for all his best-known songs in one package, give this one a hook. April 25, 2008
