How did Ry Cooder escape my notice for so long? My wife noticed a song off this album playing on a jukebox and immediately took notice. When we arrived at home we ordered the cd hoping the album reflected the song we heard on the jukebox... and it did. That sexy, surf guitar sound blended with the latin rhythm made for a wonderful album. It reminds me of some the music in David Lynch's Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me movie. The kind of music you might hear at One Eyed Jacks. Well worth a listen.

No "Manteca" here, but I am hopelessly addicted to this album anyway.
If you listen to Cuban music you will probably hear a lot of versions of "Drume Negrita" (which I think is really "Dru me Negrita") but the heavy metal here is very hypnotic.
August 5, 2008 | | Not my favorite Ry Cooder record | |
I have several Ry Cooder records. I like all of them, some more than others, and this is not one of my favorites. As usual for a Ry Cooder record, the musicianship is great but the concept doesn't work too well for me. There is less variety on this record than some of Cooder's other records. The music is very stylized and I find that a whole record of this music is a bit much. This record is mostly instrumental (the limited vocals are in Spanish) and I think that contributes to the sameness of the music. It is pleasant background music, but a little dull.
July 28, 2008I love this album. I got the feeling of being in a club listening to a band late at night who were as buzzed as the audience.Boozy/bluesy vibe over latin percussion. The ultimate lounge album. You can almost see the couples dancing slow to the rhythms.Great music.

Lots of lush reverb and ringing chords, surfed-out tones and tropical vibes, lazy tribal riddims and colorful melodic pastiches.
Perfect for zoning out in a hammock on the beach, watching the sun set and the moon rise.
Drift away...
