Japanese edition of 2003 album from Afghan Whigs frontman Greg Dulli, features 12 tracks including 1 bonus track, 'Wicked'. Teichiku. Album Description
After 5 years, I still can't stop listening to this album. It's just that good. I won't listen to it for awhile and then when I do I go on marrathon runs of listening to it for days, even weeks at a time. I always find something new. Or I'll listen to it back to back with Amber Headlights, wich was the first draft of the album. It's that good. In an age when there's so much crap out there, it's nice to know I have this album, wich was bought of a whim while I was stationed in Korea.
Buy it if you want a really good future classic.
January 27, 2008There is some good stuff on here, but the overall quality of the album is lower than its follow-up, Powder Burns. Far and away the best song is "Feathers," with its funky rhythm section, wah-wah guitar, and sentimental pop melody. Also very good is "Teenage Wristband" which teases us with a facsimile of the piano flourish from Vanessa Carlton's teenage angst hit "A Thousand Miles" and then turns it completely on its head. The last winner on the album is "Esta Noche," a sophisticated groove that Dulli crafts from the sound of a foreign dial tone. Other than "Fat City (slight return)" none of the other songs really grabbed me. As mentioned, Powder Burns is a much stronger album and has some great songs. Pick that one up first if you don't already have it.

I was one of the people first introduced to the Afghan Whigs through the Gentleman CD. The first song i heard was Debonair and as soon as the guitar opened up i was hooked. It remains one of my favorites to this day. I really enjoyed Black Love, Congregation, and if you havent heard the song YOU MY FLOWER, buy the album Up IN It NOW!
The 30 second sound clips off of Blackberry Belle here give a decent idea of the sound of some of the songs, but I really underestimated the strength of several such as "The Killer", and "number nine". Listening to them in their entireity is a necessity as they really change it up as the songs progress.
I must confess that I was not a very big fan of the album 1965. It was ok, but I felt as if the band was not totally letting go. I dont mean yelling and screaming just a little restrained. In the song Martin Eden Dulli says "I breathe in unchain myself-" and on Blackberry Belle he truly does. Great album.
March 9, 2006the last time i saw greg dulli(in person) was in the studio. i was waiting for my drummer to decide whether or not he could live with his performance on some tracks and decided to relax a while in "the lounge". greg was also taking a break from some new tracks. we exchanged greetings and sat a spell. i slowly peeked up from my origami monkey...there he was...playboy in one hand, glass of some brown liquor in the other. ciggy hanging from his lip. gut drooping over his belt. hair looking like he just rolled out of the car seat he slept in. i couldn't help but giggle over the fact that this man was considered by some to be the embodiment of sex, but if your out there wondering how, never having heard his particular whining, out of key, groaning hateful and somehow miraculous work... man you don't know what you're missing. gregs voice is every grudge %#@$ i ever inflicted on a cheating girl friend. every love/hate pounding i ever performed on those i thought would never deserve me. he is the orgasm that borders on pain. he tells you that all your dirty little secrets are alright with him, and don't we all want someone to tell us that?
