This CD is exactly what I thought it was ,
all the early songs that RCA never promoted when Elvis was becoming popular. They are just as I remembered them. These are the beginning endeavors of a super star. The recording technology wasn't anything to write home about, but the music was the sound of things to come. Anybody ( and I was one of them )that thought he was going to be a "flash in the pan" had to recognize his talent sooner or later. This CD belongs in the collection of all Elvis fans. This is truly the *Essential* Elvis. Now that the pop and glitz of Elvis' career is 50 years gone by and you want to explore the essence of what Elvis did to transform music, this is the album to get. Elvis didn't write songs that I know of, so he had to get his material elsewhere and elsewhere seems to be from musicians that were either familiar to Elvis or to the people who scouted for material for him. For me it was a great way to learn about the Shelton Brothers (Just Because), Bill Monroe (Blue Moon of Kentucky) and others. And, of course, the "Sun" sound of those old electric guitars can give you chills just all by itself. Sometimes less is more. Some of Elvis' best work is here. RCA didn't do much to build on Elvis' authenticity and that's a shame. . . but that's a critique of other albums for other days. October 20, 2007

This collection is a rock and roll timepiece! It contains songs recorded by Elvis for Sun Records in 1954 and 1955. The early recordings before he hit the big time. Each is a classic! Included are his first hits like "Blue Moon of Kentucky", and songs that made the Country Singles chart in 1955, "Baby Let's Play House", "I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone", and "Mystery Train". Also included is an alternate take of "I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone". This is CD is a must not just for Elvis fans but any student of Rock and Roll. These songs are the bricks that make-up the foundation of R&R!

It's amazing that Elvis sounded so good during his unpolished Sun Records days. He was just having so much fun with Bill on bass and Scotty on guitar. "That's All Right" will always be a classic and you can really get up and going with "Blue Moon Of Kentucky", "I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine", "Milkcow Blues Boogie", "Good Rockin' Tonight" and "Mystery Train".

Then there's the haunting echos of "Blue Moon" and "Tomorrow Night". The sound quality of the old studios just make these songs that much more effective, sending chills down your spine.

Love the bluesy sound of "When It Rains It Really Pours" and the emotion poured into the songs "I Forgot To Remember To Forget" and "Trying To Get To You".

You could tell Elvis was getting his musical feet under him during these experimental years, but you could also see all that greatness that was coming out in these two years worth of songs. The man had the ability and you could tell that potential was spilling out all over the place before making it big with RCA in 1956. June 21, 2007
