About Screaming Lord Sutch - Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends

Screaming Lord Sutch stalked the mid-'60s London club scene with the fervor of a New Testament prophet and the urgency of Jack the Ripper . . . Tracking this album's savage material with heroes like Jimmy Page, John Bonham, Jeff Beck, bassist Noel Redding and keyboard session-ace Nicky Hopkins, His Lordship's debut disc is mightily presented here in all of its pounding glory from the absolute original analog masters! Let's talk about a record nobody knows about.
In 1970, I was a member of a Record Club that wanted me to bring em' new members, and I would be rewarded with free LP's as a gift. Well, after I invented about 27 new relatives, that quite by chance lived at my parents house, the Record Club stopped sending me all the monthly packages. I must have spent a grand total of: $16.95, to get my mitts on at least three dozen {mostly free records.} I was a Pirate without a clue, {but, I owned lot's of free records!}

This LP entitled: "Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends" was mailed to me for my cousin Milton of aunt Gertie {"THREE RECORDS FOR ONE DOLLAR"} And I was pretty good about beating my mom to the mailbox, and stashing my illegal bounty. Funny enough, as I never saw this record in the stores, I was the only lad in town with a copy of this weird curio, it was rude and crude and a real prize possesion in my record collection.

Lord Sutch, {I have read} was indeed a real Lord in England. Around 1960, he was known as a rich nutter with real long hair, years before this was the fashion anywhere. He ran for public office, more than once, was the leader of many a Rock 'N' Roll band in the 1960's. Jimmy Page, produced this recording for Lord Sutch, his "Heavy" friends that appear on this are: Jeff Beck, John Bonham, Nicky Hopkins, Noel Redding and the great drummer: Carlo Little.

Lord Sutch, couldn't really sing much, but he thought this was such a laugh, he didn't let a little thing like lack of talent hold him back from being a rock star. Jimmy Page, did real fine production work on this record, and the instumental backing featuring all these top-notch veterans, is excellent. This is a very enjoyable hard rock record, and it's still fun to listen to decades later.

It's not hard to figure out what this music is about with titles such as: "Thumping Beat", "Gutty Guitar", "Wailing Sounds", "Union Jack Car" and "L-O-N-D-O-N". This is all: "one, two, three, GO!" Pulsing, driving, rock music, very simple stuff and very fun.

Lord Sutch, passed away a few years back, and there must be a thousand crazy stories from everyone who knew this one-of-a-kind character from those wild times when London was the center of the universe.

Almost all of my old records are gone now {such is my karma for inventing "fake" relatives!} But, this strange little record that nobody knew existed, is left behind as this real cool CD, for all to listen to.

I found this years ago in a Retail Store(on LP) in Santa Maria,CA. Being a huge fan of Led Zeppelin, The names in big letters saying Jimmy Page and John Bonham on the cover jumped out @ me. I hurried home to play it. It became an instant classic. All of my friends loved it (but there was only one thing the vocals were considered questionable). But through time the vocals became Lord Sutch. And once I knew the story behind the album. Jimmy Page has once played for Lord Sutch and the Savages and was in LA. recording Led Zeppelin 2. Lord Sutch was in town and called Jimmy and John Bonham down to the studio and found that the Lord and rewritten some of the old songs with a new twist like "You really got me" In to Baby Come Back. This album has become a true Gem over the years (As a teen I would in vision the "Union Jack Car" pulling up and Jimmy, Jeff, John and Mr. Redding climbing out. Only to find out that the actual car was stolen in LA. The best tracks are Flashing Lights and all the ones with Jimmy and John Bonham on, but the special surprise yes "LONDON" AND Smoke and Fire with Kent Henry on guitar he must have know Jimmy Page was there!!!! This like " The Yardbirds Live featuring Jimmy Page" is a must for any Jimmy Page Fan. The secret to the story is Lord Sutch was no idiot. Sorry to say he passed away just several years ago. So I have to rate this CD as Five Stars!!!
Buy it, it is a winner. Long Live The Lord Sutch would say from "Wailing Sounds " with Jimmy Page I can't go wrong...HE WAS RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!

I find it amusing that some here are taking this piece of rubbish (nothing but a spoof) and treating it seriously. A "cross between the Kinks and Led Zeppelin?" Beck and Page "honing their skills for the future?" Right ... They and the others must have been laughing hysterically while laying down these tracks with their all-too-rich pal, who obviously had all-too-much time on his hands. I listened to it twice back in 1970 (couldn't believe my ears the first time) and then took it down to the beach and played frisbee with it. Looks like I should have held onto it and quadrupled what I paid for the wretched thing. September 10, 2007

In my college days (the 70's) we referred to this guy as "Lord Sucks". Trust me, his music does not improve with age.

However, every music collection should include the worst imaginable music if only for a benchmark. This CD meets that criteria (along with The Shaggs "Philosophy of the World").

Buy this CD today. It really sucks and it will make you smile. June 2, 2007

Both Lord Sutch LPs are in my collection. ...what would you think if I told you that "and Heavy Friends" contains moments of great sound from an all-star cast, supporting a real English Lord who really cannot sing?
The truth is that this album, I mean CD, is a must have. I would purchase it again for its' marque value alone. It just so happens that Sutch and the band combined create a truly unique sound.
