Rarely has a performer been able to sing so effectively through his nose.
Seriously, much as I love Arlo, his voice definitely did not "make" him. Nevertheless, I grew up with this album (seriously; our LP is older than I am) and it's great. The fun songs are fun, and the serious songs are sincere.

This is my favorite work by Arlo Guthrie. From the old timey covers of "Anytime" and "Ukele Lady", Goodman's lonesome and sweet "City of New Orleans", to the raucous Hoyt Axton tune, "Lightenin' Bar",this is an American gem. This version of his father's "Hobo's Lullabye" is done lovingly, here.
May 3, 2008I am very pleased with this purchase. very reasonable price and quick delivery. Gets an A plus in my book.
November 25, 2007I love this album and I have for years. There is not one song I don't like on the whole album. I am so glad to have a copy of it again. I grew up in the 60's & 70's. I can remember where I was the first time I heard wach song. Buy it. you'll love it too.
September 14, 2007I love this music. Arlo Guthrie is a great musician and his songs are so down to earth. Hobo's Lullaby captures the great folk music of depression era America. And the 1913 Massacre is a wonderful telling of the Calumet, Michigan disaster. A must for anyone who loves folk music.
