About Death Cab for Cutie - Plans

When an indie-rock band as intimately and fiercely loved as Death Cab for Cutie makes the inevitable major-label jump, it often telegraphs a painful death. Witness Husker Du, the Replacements, Nirvana--hell, even R.E.M. After a successful four-album run on tiny Seattle imprint Barsuk, however, Death Cab for Cutie just might buck the trend on its Atlantic premiere. Yes, you can grumble about the production (a little too slick), the proportion of ballads (a little too many) and the overall feeling of restraint (a little too much), but ultimately the album delivers everything the group does best in emotional, experimental songs such as "What Sarah Said" and "I Will Follow You into the Dark," which both blend stark lyrical details with acoustic guitars and soft-focus electronics. In "Soul Meets Body," meanwhile, songwriter Ben Gibbard has come up with the kind of blissful, beatific pop song that's capable of disarming even the harshest skeptic. "A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere," he sings. --Aidin Vaziri

Having been a huge Transatlanticism fan, I bought this the day it came out and left it to collect dust for the next year. I heard it didn't live up to the previous album at all and i didn't want to ruin death cab for myself
anyway the other day i just popped this into my cd player and i was pleasantly surprised.
really catchy but that doesn't mean it's not meaningful.
marching bands, crooked teeth, your heart is an empty room i can replay on my ipod many times. actually all of the tracks are memorable..unlike transat, only a handful of songs. album full of gems. give it a try : ) June 18, 2008

Had Transatlanticism never been released I think this album would have been rated four and a half stars. Transatlanticism was so stellar that it would have been impossible to top on the follow-up record. This is a lush and beautiful album. Nothing more really needs to be said. May 17, 2008

This album has made me an enthusiastic new fan of Death Cab for Cutie. I like the mix of ballads and higher-speed tunes (even though I do wish the radio DJs would please stop playing "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" ad nauseum... clearly they failed to learn from "Under the Bridge" in the 90s how overplaying can turn a perfectly good tune into a worn-out, trite cliche that makes you switch the station). The lyrics are excellent and the melodies mesmerizing. Also, I love how there isn't one bad track on the album. This is on CD I continually play through rom start to finish, then start over and play it again. May 3, 2008

This is an excellent album by some very talented musicians. I remember hearing the "Body Meets Soul" on Austin radio in late summer '05. They performed at Austin City Limits Festival that year. I had no idea they have been around since 1998. DCFC write great lyrics. Their music is etheral. "Soul Meets Body" and "Brothers on a Hotel Bed" take me on a journey. Few bands can compare to them. They have a long career ahead of them. If you like Coldplay, Travis or Keane, then this band is for you. I look forward to their new album, Narrow Stairs, in May '08. Buy this album! You will not regret it. April 26, 2008
