About Mike + the Mechanics - Hits

Founded by Mike Rutherford, bassist/guitarist for rock/pop supergroup Genesis-in the mid-1980s when Phil Collins was pursuing his own solo efforts, Mike + The Mechanics carved out their own legacy of chart-scaling singles. Rhino's new release puts a baker's dozen of their best songs on one hit-packed disc, featuring vocals by both Paul Young (ex-sad Cafe) and Paul Carrack of previous Squeeze and solo frame. What rock was I under at the time of this band? I heard of Mike and the Mechanics and I saw their videos. Anyway, I love this group and their songs! I love Another Cup Of Coffee and Over My Shoulder. Paul Carrack has a great voice. I read that some did not like All I Need is A Miracle but I like it. It's not the orginal recording but it's just as good. I highly recommend this CD. August 22, 2008

Hits was Mike and The Mechanics' first compilation. The 13-track anthology spanned the first 11 years of the group's history starting with their 1985 debut through 1995's Beggar On a Beach of Gold. The collection also featured one new track, "All I Need Is A Miracle '96" which is a remake of one of their biggest singles. All four albums from the era covered on Hits are represented with a fairly thoughtful mix of material from each disc. While ideal track listings on "best of" sets are always debatable, I found the songs selected to be extremely representative of the body of the group's work from that period. While I ultimately prefer Mike and The Mechanics' Favourites CD if I was to pick one collection on the band, Hits makes a great introduction to the music of the Mechanics and is certainly a worth while purchase. Sadly, there was a missed opportunity by Rhino in the U.S. since this North American issue didn't surface until after the band's demise. This could have been updated to span the entire catalog and be the definitive collection. Instead, its really a repackage of the 1996 European version. June 19, 2008

I originally bought this CD because my husband was specifically looking for the song "In the Living Years." I noticed it had several other songs that I liked as well. Upon receiving the CD, I was not disappointed. The songs are of great quality. I am very happy with my purchase! February 8, 2008

What Mike Rutherford has done with his "Mechanics", is quite similar with what Phil Collins made with the late Genesis: A Pop-music band that 'decorates' its tunes with some Prog-Rock stuff.
However, for those non-Prog-Rock fans, this CD offers some remarkable Pop jewels, obtained thanks to the collaboration of M&TM with the remarkable Rock musiciam/singer/composer Paul Carrack: "Over My Shoulder" (a really beautiful song, the best one in this album), "Nobody's Perfect", and even a very silly Disco-ed reedition of "All I Need Is a Miracle".
A must-have CD for a nice weekend, lazing around at home while having a good cup of warm coffee and the whole Sunday newspaper to read... Enjoy it! June 8, 2007
