Ever wanna hear what a tone deaf, uninspired poet sounds like? Waste your money on this. Stick to your axe, Trey. No more vocals. Ever.
July 13, 2008 | | For the most part, a killer effort from Trey.
I thought Trey's self-titled first solo album was really good, definitely at least a three and a half star effort. This one is not as even as his first solo effort, but only because each of the first seven tracks of this album are dynamite stand outs. After lackluster Phish efforts such as Undermind, I thought Trey might be musically bankrupt. As it turns out, it was only Phish as a unit that was out of good ideas. The first seven songs on this album exhibit everything that is great about Trey's music, and manage to do so in a mature, tightly-constructed and concise fashion. There are no long jams on this CD, but that is one of its strengths--the melodies and hooks are so strong, so good in their own right, that the songs need not serve as vehicles or launch points for extended jams or the "orchestrated improvisation" of the early Phish albums.
That said, the CD runs out of steam after track seven, as the music becomes slower, contemplative and, unfortuanately, not real memorable. Still, if you are a fan of Phish or Trey, you really should give this a listen. It is likely to make you a big fan of this guy's music all over again.
June 1, 2007 | | Not Phish, didn't really expect it to be... not that good
Hey, I'd say that this is a bit better than Michael Bolton... really that's kinda ridiculous. I can't say that I particularly loved this cd, I can't really even say what any one song sounded like. That kinda tells me it wasn't really all that special. I'd recommend getting an album like Lawn Boy or a Picture of Nectar for a very similar price to this one, and in doing so appreciating an entirely more creative and talented side of Trey Anastasio's guitar playing. This is just pop. If that's more your bag, than go ahead and check it out. Oh, and I'm really glad I didn't put this in my computer yet, after reading about that whole Sony virus thing.

If you like Michael Bolton, Bryan Adams, the Gin Blossoms, and Santana's album Supernatural, then this groovy album is for you!

My favorite track is "Shine", full of positive energy to lift the spirit on any 'energetic' task. I had never heard of Anastasio until I happened upon this album and was happily suprised by his band's energy.
If you have trouble purchasing this album because of Sony's "virus" bug on the CD, I recommend you buy the individual tracks on-line like I did from iTunes, MusicMatch, or MSN..no problems at all !
Keep up the great uplifting writing Trey !
