About Immortal - Battles in the North

One of the harshest, most cataclysmic black metal albums ever recorded - EXTREMELY fast, vicious, and aggressive, tearing at you repeatedly like a rabid pack of ice wolves. Also one of this band's most epic hours, combining Demonaz's incredibly bizarre sense of melody with enough apocalyptic fervor to end the world a dozen times. Absolutely mandatory for those who would consider themselves knowledgeable about the Norwegian black metal scene of the past...if you like their most recent material, listen to this to learn why they have such a good reputation! Beautiful Norwegian art... Album Description

This is one of my favorite albums. Battles in the North is the third album by Norwegian black metal band Immortal. It is similar to its predecessor "Pure Holocaust", with extreme speed and ice cold production and lyrics. This CD is a classic album in black metal. Abbath's drumming here are so fast and awesome. Also here the concept of Blashyrk becomes a central focus. The concept continues through all of their subsequent albums.
In the copy that I bought here there was a mistake in the booklet and in the back cover of the CD, the tracks order are different with the ones that are in the CD. So keep that in mind. October 4, 2007

The album is a great black metal album. However, I think the copy I have has a messed up track list on the back of the case because I have seen the video for Grim and Frostbitten Kingdoms, and I know that's track 2, but it is labeled as track 7, so just be wary of that. Otherwise, it's awesome. July 29, 2007

Battles in the North may very well be Immortal's best release. Sure some will say Blizzard Beasts or At the Heart of Winter is better, but this is Immortal at its most aggressive and brutal stage. The blood-curdling pace of Demonaz' guitars and Abbath's standard snarling vocals will make any black metal fan proud.

The only weakness on this album I'd have to say is the drums. While Abbath is a strong drummer, especially on the double bass, his skills are more apparent as a bassist (and guitarist after Demonaz left due to severe arm injuries) and vocalist. Fortunately this problem is solved on the very next album with the introduction of Horgh, a true master of the skins.

A great buy for old school black metal fans, and highly recommended for those Immortal fans more familiar with their later, thrashier style as a testament to what Immortal has been since its incarnation. May 23, 2007

Amazing drumming. This is a wicked good CD with possibly the best and most intense drumming I've ever heard. I definitely recommend this CD to Immortal fans. April 1, 2007
