About Linda Ronstadt, Ann Savoy - Adieu False Heart

This teaming of Linda Ronstadt and Cajun folk traditionalist Ann Savoy, billing themselves as the Zozo Sisters, shows how wide is the musical range of bittersweetness. The harmonies and shared lead vocals offer a complementary contrast between Ronstadt's purity of tone and Savoy's more piquant expressiveness. The arrangements turn folk songs into art songs, drawing as much upon chamber strings as Cajun fiddle and accordion. There's an exquisite beauty to the vocals, but the real surprise is how well the album holds together, given a range of material that extends from Cajun songs in French patois to stellar material from Julie Miller ("I Can't Get Over You," with husband Buddy Miller on guitar) and Richard Thompson ("King of Bohemia," "Burns' Supper") to a disarming revival of the Left Banke's 1960s hit "Walk Away Renee." Among other highlights, "Go Away from My Window" provides a showcase for the upper register of Ronstadt's soprano, and Savoy's lead vocals on Bill Monroe's "The One I Love Is Gone" bring out the blues in bluegrass. --Don McLeese

Although the quality of music is good, all the songs I got to were downers. I didn't get through the whole album because it was too depressing. I guess if you are already depressed you might like it but it just wasn't for me. August 14, 2008

It's a strange but marvellous production, because I'd never believe that Linda could make more better music than real country tiped songs. Further I was astonished and happy about the CD "Covered by ......." but the new one was more different and empressed me deaply. You had to hear it for more times, so Linda invited you for a new world. June 1, 2008

This is a rare recording which all should consider adding to their collection. The artistic integrity throughout the CD -- guided by the musical instruments, but sent soaring by the vocals -- makes it stunning to listen to. Doing so is a visceral experience which almost appears to stop time. (This sounds over-the-top .. but for me this was the experience on the first listen.) Trust me: you will treat yourself to something special and unique if you put this on your CD player. March 13, 2008

OK, I'm not a big Linda Ronstadt fan and don't know her work that well. I heard her on "Wait, wait, don't tell me" on NPR and thought I'd try the album she just put out. It's a nice enough album but every song has a slow tempo and I found it a bit tedious. None of the songs "called" to me. I haven't had any real desire to listen to it again. If you are looking for slow ballads only, you might appreciate this CD more. February 22, 2008

I bought this CD with some trepedition. My last few times of trying a new Linda Ronstadt were disappointing. And while I understand why a good and longstanding artist wants to try out new forms, somehow those forms were more experiments, I think, than true to Linda Ronstadt's musical roots and her original fans. This collection is a back-to-basics and it works well. Her fellow vocalist, Ann Savoy, has a lovely, sure lilt, and the songs chosen are old-fashioned folk melodies, original enough to be interesting, yet very pleasant and undemanding to listen to.
