Used to be that a Tom Moulton Mix was the ultimate. Not here - I echo other reviewer comments that the Bear Family mixes from the 1994 box set are far superior - dynamically superior - more bass etc.
As to the timing on this set - Jamie is neither Ace nor Bear Family - minimal value for $$$.
July 27, 2008Mom and Dad had just bought a new product for the home, a stereo record player that stood in the corner of the living room....after a while I was allowed to use it and this record, as an LP, and Encore: Santo and Johnny are still buzzing gently in my head.
Long live childhood memories and sweet thoughts of days gone by.
Why?
Because we were all young once....
May 15, 2008Great original hits by rock's first instrumental star, Duane "Have Guitar Will Travel" Eddy. This CD could have been the definitive Jamie hits collection, but clocking in at just over 32 minutes with only 15 tracks, that didn't happen. The stereo remixes are hit and miss. "Because They're Young" pushes the strings way back in the mix and pushes the drums way up. Check out the much better stereo mix on Bear Family's out of print "That Classic Twang" if you can get your hands on it. I'm not sure what's been done to "Forty Miles Of Bad Road", but it's lost the punch of the original mono mix. I don't have a problem with including these new mixes, but if you've got as much space left over on a CD as this one does, include the rest of the Jamie hits along with the original mono mixes. 5 stars for the King of the Twangy Guitar, 3 for "nice try" with some of this stereo, = 4 stars. And for killer stereo mixes of "Peter Gunn", "Because They're Young", "Theme From Dixie", "Gidget Goes Hawaiian" as well as mono masterpieces like "Ramrod" and "Moovin' 'N' Groovin', try to scrounge up a copy of "That Classic Twang".
July 22, 2007Even with the three bonus tracks this CD clocks in at not much over 30 minutes. But it has all the twangs you've been looking for. And that one of the bonus tracks is the acoustically exquisite (and virtually twang-free) "Lost Island" makes it essential.
