Mindy Smith - Long Island Shores

With her expressively breathy vocals and uplifting melodies, Mindy Smith expresses both the romantic and spiritual dimensions of rapture. It can occasionally be hard to tell whether Smith is singing of God or love, or if she even makes a distinction between the two. Whether she's invoking prayer and sin in the opening "Out Loud," hoping that God's looking out for her in "Out of Control," casting a seductive charmer as a "Little Devil," or recalling her preacher father in the title track, Smith's material blurs the distinction between the earthly and the ethereal. Her duet with kindred spirit Buddy Miller on "What If the World Stops Turning" highlights the album, though the Nashville-based artist rarely hints at country within her buoyant brand of folk-pop. --Don McLeese

Wonderful Songs Exploring a Variety of Emotions

This c.d. is really a thing of beauty. Her songs are varied, express heartfelt emotions, and do not wallow in self-pity, pretentiousness and endless self-absorbtion, problems that afflict several of today's very popular singers.

She aptly styles her songs to fit the mood, the music and the content. Some of her songs are excellent: "You Just Forgot" (bitterly ironic yet sung in a pitch perfect, up-beat style--great lyrics and singing) is the best song I've heard in a long time: "Little Devil"--powerful with good lyrics and a strong up-tempo beat that belies the negative emotions expressed in the song; "You Know I love You Baby"--catchy tune with nuanced lyrics; also, excellent are "Out of Control", and "Edge of Love."

Except for the highly forgettable "Long Island Shores" (very well-intentioned though) and the passable "Tennessee, all the rest of the songs are good to very good. I particularly like "Peace of Mind" and "What if the World Stops Turning," both with lovely, moving themes. Very few c.d's can match the good to excellent percentage of songs on Miss Smith's c.d. Highly Recommended. Postscript: I like her first album, but this one far surpasses it, both in the songs themselves and the music and her singing.

In the End, We Always Find Peace of Mind

As the editorial review says, Smith has a collection of songs on this release where she may not even make a distinction between love and God. Smith's values on both were deep-rooted in her brilliant debut CD(which still holds up three years later), and her sophomore effort shows she's an artist still of her own creation because of what she feels in her own life experience. Her songs continue to pronounce her beliefs and philosophy that the meaning of God and love are simply defined in any circumstance. Whether she's political in trying to create a union of prayer in "Out Loud," or basking in the absence of the old flame that still tugs at her heart in "You Just Forgot," or seeking religious solitude in "I'm Not the Only One Asking," Smith continues to bring her depth and a sense of peace to every song, and with her sweet, country vocals, prolific songwriting, and soothing guitar, she stands out as a rare talent by offering a lifetime of lessons in twelve, short tracks. A message we all need.

Mindy Smith has a great voice, plays a guitar and puts out a message we all need. The cd starts out with Out Loud, something we all need more of prayer out loud. I am not a religous freak but we all need more prayer today. Then she tell us a little story about how the Little Devil is so pretty, how true is this. Not to jump all over but #7 is great too! What if the World Stops Turning. I think it is beautiful music by a beautiful woman, with a beautiful voice. Let me know when her next CD comes out I will buy it too! David August 21, 2007

Hurrah, Finally a second album and it works!!

A local alternative radio station did a show once about second albums that never measured up to the first so they were the last. Not so here.... this is equally as good if not better than Mindy's first album and I highly recommend it too. You can't miss with Mindy Smith. Her eclectic style and sound make her one of the new music icons. June 8, 2007
