Grammy, Oscar, Time Capsule, Dream Come True

Thirty five years ago, when I started listening to this music on LP's, I could never have dreamt of seeing clear, lovingly recorded concert and studio performances of so much of this music by these artists. Even now, the quality and content of these films and videos makes me think I have dreamt it. Could it be real? This is jazz treasure, mates.

I thought there would be about a thousand 5-star reviews but -- only 6 reviews at this moment. No matter, this set of DVD's is ** VERY WELL done **. (It couldn't be better ... except it would have been classier to use silence during the menus, instead of music).

I ordered the Volume 2 set immediately after seeing and hearing a few minutes of Volume 1. Yes. Believe it. If you are wondering whether to spring for anything from this Jazz Icon DVD series, I would say, "Yes, go ahead !!! " January 24, 2008

A Time Machine for Jazz Fanatics

This release of high quality DVD's is the next best thing to a time machine for jazz fanatics. I had received this as a gift and set it aside late last year. For whatever reason, I sat down with a friend over a glass of wine recently and watched the Art Blakey and Thelonious Monk sessions.

They were fantastic. Understanding the limitations of the time (e.g., microphone technology, analog tape machines), they were obviously of high quality with very few artifacts from wear and tear. The camera work was very good, often extremely intimate, catching the musicians in an obvious labor of love.

There is not a bad session in the bunch. This is the perfect gift for anyone on your list who loves jazz. At around $15/hour, it beats the price of any serious jazz concerts I go to, plus you can play it again and again.

I recommend a purchase of this item wholeheartedly. Enjoy!

JazzIcons has just leased a second set of discs, and although I have not sampled them yet, I would expect the quality to be just as good. And there are some great artists in that second bunch as well. December 26, 2007
