If you are looking for a place to begin with Mel Torme, start here! Mel Torme has a slew of recordings over six decades that are excellent, but many believe that the two albums compiled here on one disc (Mel Torme and the Marty Paich Dek-tette also known as Lulu's Back in Town, and Mel Torme Sings Fred Astaire) are the cream of the crop. Torme's vocal chords were in flawless condition, Paich's horn arrangements are endlessly fascinating (not to mention ample solos throughout by the band), and the songwriting is first class. There are so many highlights it's hard to know where to begin...
1. The trumpet solo on "Let's Face the Music and Dance"
2. Mel's scat solo on "Lullaby of Birdland"
3. The scorching arrangement for "The Way You Look Tonight"
4. The playful jabs at his friend Buddy Rich on "I Like To Recognize the Tune" (what to speak of Marty's arrangements which portray the lyrics perfectly).
5. Marty's dissonant horn arrangement in reponse to Mel's flawless mock-classical practice scales on "Sing for Your Supper."
6. Irresistable songs like "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off" and "They All Laughed."
Well, I could go on and on with this list all night, but it's getting late and I haven't even mentioned the packaging-- a wonderful booklet with 5 historic pictures from the sessions, one with a panoramic view of the band and Mel surrounding Marty Paich. The original liner notes are incorporated into a larger essay by Jordi Pujol. They even tell us the exact band members on each of the three session that were used for the recordings.
You just can't go wrong with this recording. We owe Fresh Sounds Records' (jazzcity series) a debt of appreciation for getting these albums back into print, and for putting a special focus on Marty Paich's contribution. One of America's great contributions to the world of jazz vocal music has been given a proper representation! =--=-=- om=-=-=- Nick January 27, 2007
