Smokey and two of the original Miracles give the history between performances. Enjoyable. But, I wish they could have gotten Claudette to give her views. Performances are great. After all, these are The Miracles.
April 28, 2008 | | I have loved this man's work since 1960 | |
I first heard Smokey and the Miracles in 1961. During that summer, my black friends played one of his early albums and I fell in love with "Bad Girl" and "Way Over There." Smokey's talent and song writing were unique then as they are now. It is also good to see old friends are still very good old friends. The interviews (while very Motown patterned) are constructed to let you hear their structured message. However, it is clear that the surviving members (minus Claudette) still have great afection for each other.
As I listen to the performances, it is also clear how important Claudette's voice was to the recordings and I would have loved to hear from her. This is an excellent portrait of a great American artist and his musical team. Smokey makes the other Motown players seem small and this is clearly not the case. It is just that he was head and shoulders above his "peers."
Top notch production is Motown's code and this is a welcome addition to my musical memories. These old TV appearances are clearly a bit dated but are wonderful to see. These folks were great live.
January 4, 2008When I looked at this DVD it made me truly understand Smokey Robinson, the man, not just the entertainer. I knew that he was talented, but to hear his partners (The Miracles) talk about what Smokey brought to the group and all that he offered and is still offering is phenominal. It did not have as much entertainment as some of the other DVD's of this sort, but is definitely worth purchasing. I recommend for any real Smokey fan.
November 21, 2007This is a great compilation of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles performances over the years. I was blown away by the a capella vocals. A must-have.
October 8, 2007This DVD is a must have. I recently showed it to family and friends and not only did they enjoy watching it, however, they got up to dance as if they were at a concert. Everybody wanted to know where I purchased the dvd. This dvd offers vintage footage and "full performances" which takes you back to this era. I plan to order more for Christmas presents.
