I'm not a big bluegrass fan - I have a handful of albums in my collection. But I CAN listen to almost any genre (sorry, rappers) when it's apparent that the musicians know what they're doing and do it with panache. And that's what's happening here. What a treat 'Quartet' is! Awesome playing, authentic, seasoned vocals, and great tunes.
Whether you're a bluegrass lover, or just love good music done well, check this one out - it's close to "Perfection"!
October 11, 2008 | | It's nice to hear the Quartet all together..
We got to hear 3/4 of the quartet recently at a local club, and they were great, but Tony Rice wasn't there that night, and it's nice to hear them all together (and add another Peter Rowan title to my iTunes library).
August 25, 2008 | | Tony & Peter at thier best
The song list put me off, I have most of these sung by Peter. But... this is some of Tony's best melodic playing ever, and some Peter's best vocals. And the rest of the band crackles. It will be seen a shining moment for both of them years to come.
August 8, 2008This is a magic album. I've got the three Old & In the Way cd's and "Moonlight Midnight" is my favorite O&ITW song. Well, the version on this new disc outshines them all, IMO.
Peter's voice has only improved with age and Tony's guitar work on "Midnight Moonlight" is amazing. The Quartet's take on the standard "Shady Grove" put new life into an often recorded folk song. "Cold Rain and Snow" sounds more haunting than ever. Highly recommended.
November 20, 2007When you get 2 artists like Peter Rowan and Tony Rice together, then throw in a coupla hot, thumping and picking babes, what's not to like? I am soon to see them in concert(within the week), and I am listening to "Moonlight Midnight" as I write this. Absolutely one of the best displays of "picksmanship" I've ever listened to. If you don't like this, you need to find a new genre of music, because this is as pure as it gets.
