After seeing a 2-hour program on Stax records on PBS, I think, I simply had to get this 2 CD set. It was a bargain and well worth it. April 1, 2008

If you don't care one way or another, "The Stax 50th Anniversary Celebration" will be a quite welcome addition to your collection. I hold back one star for the business end of things, because yet again on a fine compilation, we are given the 45 edits instead of the complete versions of songs. The ONLY time in the past this was not so was on a 1986 JAPANESE Stax comp, which being that it was mastered in the age of CD's infancy, means that it is inferior sonically to what they could do today. I probabbly wouldn't have bought this had I known ahead of time that it contained edits, but like I said before, if you don't care, what is here certainly is worth it as an introduction or as an addition to one's collection. I just wish record companies would stop being scumbags instead of revering the music as it was recorded and meant to be heard, rather than holding up versions of songs snipped to get more airplay. rating: 5 QuoteThe soundtrack for a good Gator keg party. Outstanding!Quote
When I was at the University of Florida in the mid-60's, this was the music we danced to. I'm sure it was popular all over the south, but when you have the history of Stax records which includes Otis Redding, Sam and Dave and many others you've got a great soundtrack for a keg party. Stax was an important chapter in soul music history. This marvelous collection features 50 cuts, about half which I was not familiar with, but they're all good. But how you deny cuts like: Hold On I'm Comin' and Soul Man by Sam & Dave, Tramp by Otis Redding and Carla Thomas (I just can't sit still when I hear that one), Knock on Wood by Eddie Floyd, Respect by Otis Redding (he wrote it too) and Dock of The Bay, Mr. Big Stuff, I'll Take You There (Staple Singers) and Rufus Thomas' Walkin' The Dog. I remember seeing him on campus with a soul show and he came out ( a big man about 250 pounds in a bright orange suit) just wailing away and moving and a groovin' on stage. What have you got to lose? You've got 50 soul gems, a neat booklet with photos, recording dates etc. Don't forget most of these guys in the band were the same guys that backed up The Blues Brothers in the movie and album. They are legendary musicians too. What a deal. A must for any student of soul or pop culture history. And a great background for your next keg party or whatever. February 28, 2008
