About Glenn Tilbrook - The Past Has Been Bottled

2007 release from Squeeze singer/songwriter Glenn Tilbrook. The Past Has Been Bottled features Glenn's original demos for songs that would eventually become Squeeze's masterpiece, East Side Story. 18 tracks including four previously unreleased Difford & Tilbrook-penned songs: 'Depression', 'I Don't Like Love', 'Misunderstanding' and 'Holiday Makers'. The artwork humorously features the older and wiser 2007 version of Glenn recreating his slightly off-kilter stance from the East Side Story cover. Quixotic. Album Description

I've been a Squeeze/Glenn Tilbrook fan for years and years and this disc feels like a missing piece of the puzzle. It's a genuine thrill to hear this music presented in its original form. Had these songs been presented in any other form--or with lots of production and polish--they would lose their very essence. Accept this workbook as it is: a rare glimpse into the creative process of one of the only bands that mattered. March 13, 2008

A few folks have complained about the sound on this. (These are demos, so I don't know what they were expecting!) It's not THAT bad. These rough low-fi demos are a real treat for any Squeeze-aholic. Hearing what the "East Side Story" songs were like before they were re-worked. Hearing Glenn's vocal for "Tempted" and the slightly-up-beat "Labelled With Love" are only two of the many highlights. If there's any complaints, the packaging is kinda flimsy and (worst of all) there is no demo for "Piccadilly"! Oh well.

Can't wait for the next installment of Tilbrook's demos. Way to go, mate! December 19, 2007

I don't know what the customer who gave this one star was expecting. If you are a fan of Glenn's and are someone who's willing to shell out $30 for it, then this should not be a disappointment. What you're getting here is a disc of 1980-81 home demo recordings -- so if you're looking for sonic excellence, look elsewhere. This does sound rough compared to fully produced studio recordings, but if you go into this purchase fully aware of its purpose, then sound quality takes a back seat. This features songs from the excellent "East Side Story" album in their earliest form -- some songs are fleshed out already, some are in embryonic form. But it provides great insight into how the songs evolved, and it gives you the chance to hear a handful of previously unreleased songs from that period. It's just Glenn, his guitars, some effects pedals, and a drum machine here and there. This really is for Squeeze diehards only, but if you are a loyal follower, you won't be disappointed. I am a huge squeeze fan....The disc is terrible. Compare it with early elvis demos. No sound problems there. No big transition from demo to album versions. Want to hear some great glen demos, get ahold of the Incomplete bonus disc! November 11, 2007
