I first got the the Used self titled debut from a friend and instantly I was hooked. At first glance there was nothing out of the ordinary from this scr/emo band I thought, but as time went on and it got more and more spins in my personal collection I had to sit down and digest a bit more.

There first album was incredibly raw. You can feel the honest angst in all the little details and the odd, slightly "off" tonal progressions that made this would-be bargain bin compilation classic. On top of all that honest emotion was some catchy riffs and enough punk to keep things interesting.

This album and its predecessor however, have lost that magic completely. In Love And Death was declared to be a masterpiece born out of real life anguish, and maybe so, but I think Bert was a little too caught up in his new found fame to write anything really meaningful on that album. Continuing that trend, this album should be avoided like that brown lump on the side walk. Its Berts attempt to sound like everyone else, and nothing like the teeth grinding brutally beautiful and simple honesty of The Used. November 6, 2008

I've been a fan of The Used since I stumbled across "A Box of Sharp Objects" from their debut album several years ago. Something about the way the band meshes both light and heavy melodies together with thought-provoking lyrics intrigued me. And while this concotion worked for some of the tracks on the debut, it didn't work for all of them.

However, the band has made significant progress with their third studio album, "Lies for the Liars". The use of orchestra instruments and sound effects make more tracks more interesting, giving the disc a sound that is more refined than its predecessors.

For anyone who enjoys rock music of any kind, I suggest this album. I also suggest giving both previous albums ("The Used" [self titled] and "In Love and Death") a listen. The band has changed its image and its sound from album to album, but they're still both worth the listen.

1. The Ripper 5/5
2. Pretty Handsome Awkward 5/5
3. The Bird And The Worm 5/5
4. Earthquake 3/5
5. Hospital 3/5
6. Paralyzed 4/5
7. With Me Tonight 4/5
8. Wake The Dead 5/5
9. Find A Way 4/5
10. Liar Liar [Burn In H*ll] 3/5
11. Smother Me 3/5

Remember when The Used straight up rawked? Yeah, me too. Their first CD was so raw and had such a great balance of Bert's singing/screaming. I was always amazed how in the same line he could go from melodic singing to screaming and then back to the melodic singing in the same breath, while at the same time staying catchy. He doesn't seem to do that anymore. This CD feels like he is trying to rip-off MCR's sound, but failing. Maybe they will come back and rawk, but for now, I will stick to 30 Seconds To Mars and MCR for my fill of catchy, hard rock. September 18, 2008

Maybe my jeans arent tight enough. Maybe its the fact that I like women. Whatever it is, this cd just isnt for me. If you wear tight pants and are under the age of 14, and are under 100 pounds, you'll LOVE this record. April 22, 2008

Now I have to admit that this is the first album of theirs that I have actually listened to, so I'm not wholly familiar with their previous work or how good it "once was". I'm not what could be called a hardcore rock fan where I take every bit of music made by a band seriously, and I'm not a person who really cares that much about commercialisation which is likely to be the next accusation thrown at a band like this. Sure to some the lyrics may seem simplistic and childish but all in all this is a very good album that I could listen to over and over again. To be honest I came across this band by chance when watching a music station and the video for bird and the worm started. That was a song that really made me think "Wow this is a damn good song" this convinced me to download the album (Legally of course) and I was nothing short of blown away. This isn't a "Hardcore" rock album where it's constant pointless screaming that you can't really understand, and over the top guitar play.

Some of the best songs on the album I felt were

Bird and the Worm
The Ripper
Hospital
Paralyzed
With Me Tonight

I feel this is definitely worth the buy as it's an "emo" album that isn't too over the top. April 16, 2008
