I'd never heard of Jackie Ryan before now. A friend of hers whom I recently met, knew I was a Jazz lover and suggested I check her out. "You and the Night and the Music", the CD I purchased to sample her talents, simply blew me away! Ms Ryan has it all...voice and range to be sure, but her phrasing and sense of timing is world class, as are the arrangements she and her group of musicians put together for this offering. I cannot imagine why she has not been "discovered" long before now!
If you are looking for an artist who brings back memories of Ella, Sarah, and others of that era, look no further. Add to that her own unique talents and you have the makings of very pleasant experience....listening to sounds that make you smile!
May 20, 2008I heard Ryan's version of "You, the Night, and the Music" on the radio, and I called the station to find out who was singing. This is one of the TOP THREE albums I own. Ryan is absolutely par with Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, and Ella. Ryan's voice is pure silk: smooth, great diction, sensitive and lush phrasing, controlled, full-bodied--ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!!! Please don't miss the opportunity to enojoy this music. The band is stellar; the arrangments are phenomonal, and arrangements can ruin otherwise great songs--these arrangements elevate these songs to a new level. The dynamics are thrilling! Every song on this disc is a treasure. This album is definitely a Grammy winner--no doubt!!!
April 20, 2008 | | I agree, a Major Jazz artist! | |
See all the 5 star reviews? Believe it. She is absolutely top tier. Start with what is arguably the best voice in jazz, add total emotional connection, superb feel for each and every song idiom she sings in. Sometimes gentle, sometimes fierce. Not afraid to really let go. Finally a female singer who is not whispering into the mike. OK, one little complaint, her Italian accent isn't perfect. This album is totally 5 stars, as are all her others. I can't wait to see her in person in NYC. I agree with others, and ask the jazz world to take note. She should be in the stratosphere! I hear she is a really nice person too. All the best wishes for her.
April 4, 2008I first heard this singer doing a great rendition of Besa Me Mucho and immediately bought a couple of her CD's. She has an amazing voice with a wide range and utter control. Couple that with some tasty song selections...oh yeah! Am looking foreward to hearing her live next time she comes to the City.
January 18, 2008I heard an interview with Jackie Ryan on NPR and they played some excepts from her cd. I was so entranced with the music that I put it on my wish list immediately. But I couldn't wait and so I bought it for myself. I play it at work and several people have commented that it's a great cd. It is billed as jazz but I think its appeal is wider than that. There are lots of old standards on this and a nice mix of new tunes too.
