About Great White - Back to the Rhythm

Great White's sound has more in common with the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, and Led Zeppelin than that of their contemporaries. Great White consists of nearly all original members, the most recent of which has a nine year history with the group. The guitar and vocal team of Jack Russell and Mark Kendall are stronger than ever on this explosive new CD and have a unique synergy, not unlike Plant/Page, Tyler/Perry or Jagger/Richards.

Every time I hear a Great White album I end up scratching my head and wondering why this band never became bigger stars. They had talent to spare, and their music had a sense of soul and integrity that most of their peers in the hair metal scene could never hope to match. Plus, regardless of musical trends, in all their years in the business they've never released a bad album.

2007's Back to the Rhythm is their latest offering, and is the first album in a while to feature the (mostly) original lineup. It's also a bit more laid back than I expected. Don't get me wrong, there are some great upbeat rockers on this album (Still Hungry and the title track come to mind), but for the most part the band focused on the more melodic, bluesy aspect of their sound, which is one of their major strengths. Here Goes My Head Again is a great example of this sound (and is probably Back to the Rhythm's best track), and songs like I'm Alive and How Far is Heaven (gorgeous solo on that one), while decidedly mellow, are just so damned beautiful you have to love them. Like Whitesnake's comeback album Good To Be Bad, Back to the Rhythm is a smart, smooth and soulful rock album that proves Great White only gets better with age.

If you're a Great White fan, you probably don't need anyone to tell you that Back to the Rhythm is worth buying. It may not rock as hard as Once Bitten... or Shot in the Dark, but it's still a terrific rock album and a worthy addition to the Great White discography.

I was always a huge fan of Great White. I really enjoyed Jack Russell's soulful smooth voice, unmatched at that time, very emotional and awesome. Then came Once Bitten, Twice Shy and he changed his singing style to a raspy common type of voice. I really miss the smooth style that he once had and wish he would use that again on at least half of the songs on their albums, but the past few have all been the new raspy style and hard for me to listen to. Everything else is great, though. March 11, 2008

Great White continues to carry the torch for true rock fans out there! GW were never pretenders and on their latest effort they don't disappoint! This is exactly what you want from a GW album. Honest, straight-forward rock and roll. To the guys in the band, please keep it coming!! For anyone wondering, the album is very tenderly dedicated to those affected by the tragic fire at the bands show in West Warwick, RI back in 2003. February 15, 2008
