It's one great song after another, almost all that she wrote or co-wrote. The lyrics, the rhythms, & the collaboration with other musicians are all in full form for Nona on this 1983 release . The 3 singles from this album are just some of the great songs here - " KEEP IT CONFIDENTIAL ", " TRANSFORMATION " [ written by Nona & Carole Pope and Kevan Staples from the Toronto band Rough Trade ], & " B-BOYS " were all hits on the charts. My other personal favorites are the blistering " RUN FOR COVER " which has a great message lyrically, blends a funk bass line, keyboards & an electrifying guitar solo plus strong gospelish background vocals [ which easily could have been a Labelle song here ]is just genius. " LIVING ON THE BORDER " is another funk/rock blend with a message that rocks, and " STEADY ACTION " is a collaboration in reggae style! There are so many surprises here, it won't let a music lover down.
Nona is a musician who collaborates with a variety of artists & is known for her post-Labelle years for also working with the Talking Heads. Here she pulled together a historic first for the song " DESIGN FOR LIVING ". Nona gathered together female musicians such as Laurie Anderson, Nancy Wilson [ of Heart ], Gina Schock [ of the Go-Go's ], Valerie Simpson, Tina Weymouth [ of Talking Heads ] and longtime friend Patti LaBelle for a song that defies description. This was Nona's 2nd album, following her solo 1977 album on Epic [ " NONA HENDRYX ", yet another classic to be heard ], and is the first of her 3 albums for RCA from 1983-1985. All are worth hearing, all are timeless, and all show Nona as a true musical spirit & pioneer.
