About Bobby Darin - Commitment/Rare Darin

2007 two-fer from the legendary multi-talented entertainer featuring a double dose of Bobby Darin on one shiny disc. Commitment (1969) is the second of his two protest albums recorded for his own Direction label and the only album released under the name Bob Darin. The second 'album' on this CD rounds up the non-album single sides and two songs from the Commitment sessions plus four songs recorded live at the Troubadour in L.A. in '69. Edsel. Album Description

At long last, Bobby Darin's (excuse me: Bob Darin's) brilliant album, Commitment, has been pulled out of undeserved obscurity and released in its entirety on CD for the first time ever. In the decades since the album's release in 1969, it has mainly only been known to those devoted fans whose diligence in searching was eventually rewarded with finding a copy on vinyl. Having thus far been unable to obtain the record, I was absolutely thrilled when I found out that Edsel was releasing it on CD. I bought it immediately, and it has since become one of my most played Darin albums. (And considering just how many fantastic Darin albums there are to listen to, that's really saying something.)

I should note that not everything on this album is brand new to CD. "Me and Mr. Hohner," "Song for a Dollar," "The Harvest," "Distractions (Part I)," and "Jive" can all be found on other compilations. Meanwhile, the bonus tracks included by the Edsel label as "Rare Darin" won't be so rare to anyone who has the Songs from Big Sur disc. That being said, however, songs like "Sugar-Man," "Sausolito (The Governor's Song)," "Water Color Canvas," "Hey Magic Man," and "Light Blue" are more than worth the price of this CD.

I am not going to attempt to review the music itself, as I don't think my words could do it justice. Just suffice it to say that, whether you're a longtime fan, or have only recently been introduced to the incredible talent that was Bobby Darin, this is definitely a must-have disc for your collection.
