One Disc Would Have Been Better

Like genxgirl, I at times am not sure what to make of COVER ME. This was a Christmas gift from a German friend of mine, and there are some songs on here that I really enjoy. This is Nena's first album of covers with one disc of German re-makes and another in English.

There are 31 songs, and therein is the major problem. One disc would have been enough. Too many cooks spoil the broth. Sometimes less is more. Weniger ist mehr. Zu viele Köche verderben den Brei (that is, "Too many cooks will spoil the porridge").

Some of these German tunes are well-done. The musical orchestration is admirable, fully realized, and Nena performs with feeling and finesse. Examples: Klaus Hoffmann's "Mein Weg ist mein Weg," Marlene Dietrich's "Ich werde dich lieben," "Winter Sommer," "Astronaut" and "Ein Lied." But there are some other songs that are fairly pointless. Re-made soley for the purpose of being re-made, there's not much Nena brings to the table that another artist hasn't already captured.

This is especially true of the English disc. Not singing in her native tongue, Nena is difficult to understand, and the accompanying emotion is also lacking. "Big Yellow Taxi" is a good one that really fits Nena's sexy urban style. But she could have used a vocal coach for the others. She did a much better job singing in English on IT'S ALL IN THE GAME back in '85. December 6, 2007

These songs are NENA's favorite songs perhaps? Not the best songs for Nena to sing. I found the English songs to be 20+ years old songs. So - they were OK. I could not get into these as much as into the real Nena songs. Even the German songs were ok - and many the kind of songs Nena would never make or sing on her own album. I guess this is a cover album so for that I give it a 3. Nothing stands out really - but Nena makes the listening more enjoyable. November 19, 2007
