rating: 4 QuoteTasty new quartet musicQuote
I just heard this in album form on KCSN Arts and Roots, fine public radio station out of CSU Northridge. Very tasty, so much that I called the station about it.

A broad range of selections from Jazz, Tango, Funk (!), you name it. Several tunes by the late great composer Raymond Scott, who wrote a lot of good music beyond the Looney Toonz that made him famous. Crisp production, and wonderful voicing by Quartet San Francisco. You might not expect some of the pieces to work in the quartet format, but Jeremy Cohen is a first class arranger working with musicians who can pull it off.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is personal taste - I like to wrestle with the music a bit, and the selections are more mainstream, which is a minor fault. If you like the expanded repertoire of new quartets, this is a find. February 2, 2008
