This review concerns the Audio CD 'Hot' by Avril Lavigne.
The CD I received from Amazon.com, has the following
ISBN number: 8-8697-17036-2-7.

This CD contains two singles, 'Hot' and 'I Can Do Better'.
Unfortunately, they are not spaced "seconds apart", but it
seems an instant apart. I don't like that because the mood
is different on the second single 'I Can Do Better', than on
the first, 'Hot'. You go from a "high" to a "downer", in
what seems to be a fraction of a second, like a "crash".

Also, on the second single, 'I Can Do Better', she uses a
word which might make you think, "Quiet on the set, the
'it' girl has arrived". Listening to these two singles,
you may feel like you go from stardust, to the dust of
the earth, as in 'dung', in what seems to be a fraction
of a second. "She loves me, she loves me not", that sort
of thing. Love and fidelity go together, like an unbroken
circle. The circle is broken on this album because of
song #2, 'I Can Do Better'.

A PARADOX is of two statements, BOTH true, but which
appear to contradict each other.

This compilation is not a paradox, unless you interpret
the second single 'I can do better' as not being about
a relationship, but a protest against organized religion.

This compilation is two singles which contradict each
other, for how can both be true? You either love somebody,
or you don't. You are either 'Hot', or you are 'I Can Do
Better'. If 'Hot' says "I love you", then 'I Can Do Better'
says, "Now, I've changed my mind". If you don't think of
these two songs as being a simultaneous event, as in,
"Before you is placed Coke and Pepsi", but one event precedes
the other (a roller coaster ride, an "upper" followed by a
"downer"), and if you assume both sentiments are true, and
about the same person, you still end up with a contradiction,
and not a paradox. The audience is left with the
contemplation, "Well, I guess you were lying then when you
said those three words to me before, huh?" A circle broken,
is a contradiction, and not a paradox. A paradox, would be
a circle unbroken, and yet with a beginning and an end.

'HOT' is an amazing single because the mood is that of
"eternally yours". And so I have difficulty reconciling
the other single 'I can do better' with the first single,
'Hot'. I suppose it might be a paradox if you consider a
third possibility to the scenario, "she loves me, she loves
me not", which is "not knowing". Imagine wearing a
blindfold, and never knowing which of the two conditions hold:
Is she a Goddess ('Hot'), or a Dominatrix ('I Can Do Better)?
If you can't tell them apart, then I guess she is Wonder Woman,
as in, you'll never know. That said, I just wanted 'Hot', the
single. But if a "flip-side", why place it so close to 'hot'?
Why not a pause before the second song starts? Though it is the
same artist, perhaps the two songs are meant to be taken as two
different girls? And so, song #2 may be about a jealous
girl-person who is thinking, "I want to be your girlfriend",
while saying, "I can do better"? I don't understand why RCA,
or Avril, decided to put two such unlike songs on one disc.
Art is interpretive, and often the intentions of an artist are
left unknown by his, or her, fans.

There is another CD version called 'HOT', which is also sold as
a 'SINGLE'. But that one contains the song, 'I can be your
girlfriend', rather than 'I Can Do Better'. Frankly, I prefer
this CD to that one because in the song, 'I can be your
girlfriend', she refers to herself using a phrase that sounds
like "Mafia Princess", which is not very lady-like. That said,
Avril's single 'Hot', is very cool, as in the expression, "She's
a haughty". A paradox? Can something be both hot and cool?

In her music video, 'Hot', She dominates. But is She the
Goddess, or the Dominatrix, promising green-peace and a
touch of socialist-red? A mystery, n'est pas? What was
called RED is now called GREEN. There was a song called,
'Crimson and Clover'. Perhaps Avril got the idea for 'Hot',
the song and the video, from 'Crimson and Clover'? That
said, disregarding any similarity between 'Hot' and 'Crimson
and Clover', 'Hot' is far superior to 'Crimson and Clover',
in expressing faithful devotion to a goddess. That said,
this audio CD does not contain the video, 'Hot', but the song
alone. I mention the video because it was well-made. I guess
they don't make DVDs that you can also play as a CD, because
if they could, it would have been better if you could get the
song 'Hot' with the music video 'Hot' on one disc. That said,
given what was available, if you like the song 'Hot', I
recommend this CD with the reservation that you might want to
check out the single 'I Can Do Better' first.
