I had high hopes for this album. I'm a big fan of Giulini and Brahms and hoped this pairing of the two Brahms piano concerti along with a bonus of a very good Brahms Violin Concerto would be a winner. Unfortunately, I'll never know if this is a good album or not. My copy was flawed; disk 2 would not track. I returned it for a replacement. In this case not only would disk 2 not track, disk 1 also would not track. I still think the performances have a great chance to be excellent. The problem seems to be EMI's quality control in producing CDs. This is not the first time I've had this problem with them in this regard. If they ever get it fixed, I'd like to try again, but how am I apt to know? May 15, 2008

This is a great collection of beautiful music - complex, but once appreciated, an Epiphany.

I dabble in Beethoven, Mozart, Debussy, Rimsky-Korsakov. This album was a wonderful new experience for me. April 27, 2008

rating: 4 QuoteArrau, Fournier, Giulini, Klemperer, and Oistrakh -- at fire sale pricesQuote
For less than the cost of a single full-price CD, EMI offers the artistry of Giulini, Fournier, Arrau, and Oistrakh. These are names to conjure with, and the results are impressive. At least one great performance has been included, Oistrakh's reading of the Brahms Violin Cto. with Klemperer, one of my great favorites since the early Sixties. As far as virtuosic playing goes, the Double Cto. with Oistrah and Fournier is luscious, and they receive an outstandingly clear, warm recording (Alceo Galliera is the more than competent conductor). High praise goes to Giulini's two Philharmonia recordings of the Tragic Over. and Haydn Var.

In other words, there's so much that's good I can overlook what I dislike, Arrau's ponderous, baggy readings of the First and Second Piano Contertos -- needless to say, Arrau fans will be thrilled. Overall, this is one of EMI's most generous three-fers, and it's a shame that nobody at amazon seems to be paying attention.
