I haven't pulled this one out for 5 years or so. I'm sorry that I did. I was making my best of Journey CD (post Perry not included) and searched Trial by Fire for a gem or 2. I can honestly say this CD sorely sucks. I'm almost sure these are out-takes from the last few CD's in the 80's. How many balads are there on this thing? Take a look at the picture of the band on the jacket. Was Perry cut and pasted in? He looks like he'd rather be taking a crap. I love this band but this album was a mistake. July 1, 2008

I've never reviewed this and thought now would be the appropriate time since the band just released their new album, 'Revelation' with their new lead singer. Amid the many varied reviews on this album, I've always been a fan of this one and consider it very under rated. I was never really sure what the fans were looking for here. After 'Raised on Radio' which was pretty much a Steve Perry solo project, I felt this album was a true comeback for that trademark Journey sound. Others will disagree with me here. To put it at their worst along with 'Raised on Radio' as one reviewer commented I think is mistaken. 'Raised on Radio' would have to be Journey's most polished studio album and that is what made that album unique, Maybe not very memorable, but still not their worst. I would much rather see 'Evolution' as one of their worst following the huge 'Infinity' album which to this day still remains one of their strongest selling albums. For 'Trial by Fire' all the typical Journey elements are present here, the rockers, the mid-tempo's and the ballads. For me, I always love the rock so I'm more apt to favor that side of Journey because they do it well and on this album they kill it. 'One More' and 'Castles Burning' are prime examples where they went outside a little bit of their comfort zone to deliver these. 'When You Love a Woman' earned them a Grammy so Cain delivered there. The closing track 'Trial by Fire' is just an awesome track with Schon on guitar showing you what his work is like on his solo efforts like 'Beyond the Thunder'. I just don't get the negative about this album at all especially if you're comparing it to albums like 'Evolution'. For me, this is a great album from Journey and it's a shame that the band and Perry had their falling out because it would been cool to see where they went next. June 18, 2008

This sounds like a downgraded version of Perry's 1994 solo album "for the love of strange medicine," which by the way was very good. You can feel the tension among the members of the band, here, that spoils the chemistry. Boy, what a long collection of unmemorable, plain dull songs. I can maybe salvage three tracks here: the single "when you love a woman," mid-tempo rockers "If He Should Break Your Heart" and "Forever in Blue," None of them, by the way, equal the poorest track from their previous album "Raised on Radio."And I don't know how one can explain the very poor production here given they had a huge comeback budget to record and promote this thing. I spent the full price back in 96 for the original release. What a shame. I would rather go ahead and download the extra track, another decent one, that Mr. Perry wants me to shell out another 15 buck to have. Very small minded thinking, whoever decided it. June 3, 2008

It's a shame very very good musicians technically, musically and respected by other musicians around the world have put their names on this record. This sounded more like a Vanessa Williams record.Steve wanted to sound very contemporary. Actually a cover up for not being able to sing the same way he did in the late 70's. He attempted to change the sound of the band so he can stay...and then record ballads left and right.. so he can stay. I wanted to hear them rock again and not to contribute to a Disney Movie soundtrack. Michael Bolton and Richard Marx rocked harder than Journey here. Not a good record for Journey but a decent album for Steve Perry. May 24, 2008

I purchased this cd from Amazon and have had an excellent purchasing experience with them. I just want to add that I have this cd, and it is wonderful!!! I love the songs, they are all fantastic. If you love Steve Perry you will love this cd. The music is soulful and emotional, a wonderful listening experience. February 15, 2008
