| | "The begining of a new Hip-Hop legacy"! | |
The name GANG-STARR is synonimous with Hip-Hop any where in the world you might go. In 1989, a Bean Town born/B'klyn blessed MC "manifested" over a dope DJ Premier track, some funky rhymes with a trademark voice. This would mark the begining of a new Hip-Hop dynasty that's still in full effect to this day. GANG-STARR , through out the years, has put out classic after classic after classic! And this is their first one. Expect nothing less than banging beats and an ill flow from this incredible duo. This CD edit. contains extra tracks not found on the original '89 pressing on wax and cassette. This is 100% grass-roots Hip-Hop for your enjoyment. No ignorant thug, BS, Rims, platinum crap. Just plain ol' good Hip-Hop for your ear.

This is where Guru and Premier's legacy began. This is a demonstration Gang Starr finding their sound and formulating their well respected chemistry. The jazz sound on this album would eventually pass on through their next two classic albums. This is a must have for alternative hip hops fans and those who are just beginning to discover Gang Starr's consistent and masterful collection of music. Don't sleep on one of hip hop's best duos.
July 24, 2005You must be from another dimension if you are comparing this to MC Hammer. This album defines classic, jazzy, socially positive rap. Stop hitting the crack pipe. If you are going to compare it to anything, how about A Tribe Called Quest and KRS One. And Kid 'N Play were pretty good, even Big Daddy Kane gives them the thumbs up. Their cartoons, movies, comic books, etc. have no bearing on the albums. They are classic stuff. Like 3rd Bass, they still get hated on by people who have no clue. And almost every hip hop act back then had dancers. That was a definant part of the culture before gangsta rap took over and slightly fudged up things. Anyways, this album is perfection. Guru drops knowledge with crazy skill over some very funky Priemo beats utilizing classic samples. A hip hop album like this will never be made again, don't pass it up. I put it right up there along side Step Into the Arena and Daily Operation. Don't sleep, this is not a 3 star album!!!!

I hate to say it, I'm adicted to Gang Starr! I have my there dicovery stacked next to my Public Enemy, KRS-ONE, and Mr. Lif collection. I don't think about clubbin', I think about women often, but don't want women and love in my head and ears all day. I'd like to say that I prefer to keep my mind busy being creative, and wise as much as possible, thus I cling to these old concious beats, as well as ID centered musick such as Pink Floyd, The Residents, Skinny Puppy, Devo, Tear Garden, etc.
So for this album, I was pleased on the concious level, great lyrics, but as you can prolly tell from it's cover, it was released in the era of Kid & Play, MC Hammer, Technotronic, Vanilla Ice, etc. Which to me is the separation of Hip-Hop and Rap, infact the birth of Rap, and perhaps an early form of popified Hip-Hop.
Of course this album does not go as far into the gay realm as Kid & Play and the other before mentioneds, but it still is no wear as cool as all there other later releases which are pretty much flawless.
Note for the neo-phites: Only buy as a last album if you are collecting!!!! Unless of course you are hard core into Hammer in which case, ignore the rest of the collection, and stick with this. :)
