About The Cure - Sleep When I'm Dead (Mix 13)
The Cure, one of the most revered British bands of the past quarter-century, have unveiled their plans to release four singles, one each month starting May 13th, leading up to the release of their thirteenth studio album, as yet untitled, which will be out on Suretone/Geffen Records September 13, 2008. It will be the band's first album of new music since 2004's self titled album The Cure. Physical and digital singles will be available. Why the 13th of each month? The forthcoming album is The Cure's thirteenth studio album... A lucky number indeed!
Led as always by lead singer/guitarist Robert Smith, the Cure line-up comprises longtime members bass player Simon Gallup, drummer Jason Cooper and, back in the band for a third time, guitarist Porl Thompson.
The Cure first formed in southern England in 1976 as Easy Cure. In 1978 the 'Easy' was dropped, and The Cure was signed to the Fiction label. In May 1979 their debut album Three Imaginary Boys was released to great acclaim.
Other landmark Cure albums include Pornography (1982), The Head on the Door (1985), Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me (1987), Disintegration (1989), Wish (1992), Wild Mood Swings (1996), the Grammy-nominated Bloodflowers (2000) and their last full length release, the self-titled set The Cure (2004). 2006 saw the Suretone/Geffen release of Festival 2005, an award winning 5.1 DVD featuring 30 songs, shot by fans, band members and professionals during the summer of 2005's European festival run. The first song "Sleep When I'm Dead" is absolutely wonderful...verry remny of early Cure songs from albums like "Disintegration" and "Pornography". The second song is just ok...not bad. My favorite thing to say here is that allthough the music is raw...the qaulity is fantastic. Verry loud...a well produced album..err, siingle...whatever.

As with my previous review of "The Perfect Boy", if you are a long time Cure fan you'll find something to like about this single and b-side. Be it Robert's determined voice or Porl Thompson's guitar work. Put this silver platter on a high end system and you'll hear the sonic landscape created by these British music icons. And if you don't, simply hit repeat.
October 14, 2008"Sleep When I'm Dead" is definitely the most Cure-like of the new singles, and a little adventurous even. Sure, as with all of the singles the sound quality lacks, is far too compressed, and lacking character, but song-wise this is definitely the best. Plus, "Down Under" is one of the best recorded new songs I've heard!
September 1, 2008Both songs are great! I personally like the second song better however they are both great!
August 29, 2008No this single isn't going to change the world or stop world hunger. But as far as Cure tunes go, this is a classic. Bob's doing just what he wants, just like he's done since 'Japanese Whispers'. Aside from the fact thats its a 'head on the door' out take, its got everything this old school cure fan expects-psychedelic guitars, textural layers, and lyrics that reward multiple listens. Oh and he's taking the piss outta all the naysayers to boot. 'Down Under' is a great trippy, aural tune that sticks in the brain and leaves me wanting more. It's great to hear Porl back on guitars. If that's a throw away track I cant wait to see whats on the album.
