I have enjoyed over 30 years of George Clinton through most of his incarnations. Parliament, Funkadelic, on his own or with the P-Funk All Stars, Clinton has given his listeners much to savor and commend. "George Clinton and His Gangsters of Love" is not one of those efforts. On first listen this collection sounds like tracks that were rejected from other works. After listening to this twice it becomes clear these tracks would never have been made and rejected from any of his previous collections. I can barely recommend a track, even though "Gypsy Woman" has Carlos Santana on it.
It's hard to pan new work from an icon in the music business, but in this case, it's inevitable. Everything here seems done on auto-pilot, and since Clinton's charm revolves around improvisation, this lackluster effort cannot be touted. I am sorry I bought this CD, and I am sure most diehard P-Funksters would be disappointed. If you never listened to George Clinton or any of his groups and chose this collection to check him out, you would be making a huge mistake. Listen to "(Not Just) Knee Deep" and revel in the flavor of Funk.
November 12, 2008This is the natural progression of his work, in my opinion. I haven't like an entire album this much since his "One Nation Under A Groove". It's my newest addition to my car CD collection.

This review stems from the Love of classic P-Funk, George, Parliament, Funkadelic whatever. I.E., I'm a funkateer from way back. First of all, this album is not a Funk affair. This is about paying homage to the art of the original Slow Jamz. From the 50's to the present. Don't fret, it still has some of that freaky unpredictable weirdness that permeates the best of the P-Funk output. Keep in mind , GC has been around awhile and time has taken it's toll on his voice. This is not 1978. That said, this is still fun stuff. Very forward thinking without pandering too much. Good stuff. Go ahead George! Check it out.
